WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A night in the life of several key teenagers on their last day of school before summer basically summarizes the story of this 1993 Richard Linklater directed film. But it’s so much more than that for it takes place in 1976, in small town America, and the drugs are flowing!
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Ah the seventies! Yes, it was the decade of my childhood years. In this film, it is the decade of the main characters’ teenage years, so much the better for them as at that age they could “indulge” in the weed and the drink that they are particularly fond of. Since they are celebrating their last day of school, they are very much in the “party” mood and bongs, zig-zags and reefer abound for those of you who might be offended by this sort of thing.

Randy “Pink” Floyd (played by a very, very good-looking Jason London) and his main squeeze Simone, (Joey Lauren Adams) are joined by at that time relatively unknown actor Matthew McConaughey (as Wooderson) as well as an almost unrecognizable Ben Affleck (O’Bannion) in one of the coolest teen high school movies I have ever seen. It has since become an acclaimed cult favorite, along with Fast Times at Ridgemont High which it comes in a two DVD set entitled “The Ultimate Party Collection” with. Milla Jovovich (as Michelle) makes a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-her” appearance as well as an amazing Adam Goldberg (Mike) in a really interesting role here. Parker Posey (Darla) lends herself to play a very annoying and bitchy senior who harasses the junior teens. She plays the girl you love to hate so well. High school initiation rites are rampant, so are funky 70’s clothing and fast cars, and last, but certainly not least, the seventies rock music which is everywhere in this film, and I loved every second of it.

My absolute favorites, Deep Purple, feature prominently here as well as Aerosmith, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Peter Frampton and even The Runaways and Alice Cooper. Yes, the soundtrack is almost better than the film. Not quite though. And did I mention Ben Affleck? He rocks and in this film, before he hit it big, he plays the perfect bully and you just want to hate him more. He is evil here, trust me. Top-notch acting mixed with a great story line and a fabulous soundtrack makes for a very happy viewer in me. Conspiracy theories with the dollar bill and George Washington who used to be big into marijuana are prominently featured here which made me smile as I also used to hang with some stoner dudes who told me exactly the same thing back in the day “Did you ever take a look at the American dollar bill, man? There’s some crazy shit on there”. The eye in the pyramid, the Illuminati, fun stuff dudes!
THE EXTRAS
Nine Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes: Some of the scenes are heavy and racist. I am glad they eliminated these scenes, we missed nothing cool with their deletion.

The Blunt Truth: Institutional Filmstrip on the Dangers of Partying: Hilarious 5-minute mock documentary à la “Reefer Madness”, it’s too bad it only lasts five minutes as it is very funny. Definitely worth checking out.

Two Retro Public Service Announcements: Two one minute short PSA’s about VD and something else. Not worth much, maybe that’s why I don’t even recall the second PSA’s subject matter.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
A funny, sweet and believable look into the life of the many teens living in 1970’s America during the continuing drug revolution which started in the sixties. Nostalgia clearly comes into play here, so if the seventies are special to you, or if you grew up as a teenager back then, you might enjoy this film more than the average John Doe out there. Or should I say Joe Blow? The bonus features are very cool, but sadly not long enough. Anyhow, if nostalgic rock’n’roll movies are your thing, and if you like teen comedies, then you may want to consider renting or buying this DVD today and add it to your collection of fine viewing material.
