WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
John Milton (see what they did there?) has literally been to Hell and back avenging the death of his daughter. Milton's daughter's killers also kidnapped his infant granddaughter. So, naturally he drives to Louisiana, killing people and blowing shit up to save her from being sacrificed in a Satanic ritual.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
You know that girl who shows up to your party and gets wasted on non-alcoholic beer? You know, she photobombs every picture and tells her friends that since you shared a cigarette with her, you basically made out? This movie is that girl. It's like, you wish she would stop trying so damn hard, but at the same time, she does serve a purpose as entertainment for some people.

For being the lead actor, Nicolas Cage doesn't have that much to go on as Milton. He just glowers and shoots a lot. Amber Heard seems frustrated as Piper. She does the best she has with the crap they gave her. She's pretty and tough, but definitely slumming it up in this particular film. William Fichtner is creepy and yet cliched as The Accountant, the shadowman assigned with bringing Milton back to Hell. (The handful of funny moments are due to him.)

I understand that this was meant to be viewed in 3D, and yet I cant help but think that they could've done better with their first effects. They don't get much better, and eventually spiral into a gooey mess. I appreciate explosions and boobs as much as the next person but for heaven's sake, give me a minute to appreciate them before some dude gets his face blown off. I realize it might be unprofessional to use terms like "hot mess" in a review, but damn.

If this is your bag, then more power to you, enjoy the shit out of it. I'd never begrudge someone their preferences. However, for us more mainstream movie fans, this is a bit much. I just didn't care about any of these people or their problems. It was a relief, for me, to turn it off.

THE EXTRAS
Deleted Scenes: Maybe thirty seconds of nothing that would affect the film in the slightest.

Experience DRIVE ANGRY: An interactive option that allows you to activate certain scenes for access to interviews with actors and filmmakers, and a body count option.

Commentary: With Patrick Lussier & Todd Farmer. (There's also a commentary option for the deleted scenes.)
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Seriously, I might not be the best person to review this, as I'm not exactly a grindhouse connoisseur, but I think I said "What the shit?" at least ten times. However, I can see where some movie fans would enjoy the ride.

I hardly see Nic Cage being enthusiastic in his movies lately. Last time I think Cage actually enjoyed his movie was in the first National Treasure. Just a thought.
