The idea that Santa unknowingly abducts a baby and brings him back to the North Pole is uniquely entertaining but one does have to wonder why heíd decide to raise him instead of simply returning him to his parents that same night before they even knew he was gone. Of course, I donít think they really want us to do much thinking here as the first twenty minutes make for a great acid trip themed flick, especially when Buddy decides to leave for New York in search of his father. Buddy has a full blown conversation with a talking clay snowman along with a slew of other talking animals which seriously does a number on this filmís tone as these bits are a tad bit more odd then they are funny.
In all honesty, Iím not a big fan of Will Ferrell. With the exception of A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY and ANCHOR MAN, this is about the only other film of his I find even remotely re-watchable. The guyís overrated, predictable and terribly boring but I can honestly say that I canít imagine anyone else pulling off the character of Buddy the elf. There are so many great one liners and gags in this flick that you just canít help but laugh; Buddy eating the used gum, his all out brawl with the fake Santa Clause and then again with Peter Dinklage (whom I met in real life and is a riot when heís loaded) and my personal favourite, when he answers the phone and says, ďBuddy the elf, whatís your favourite colour?Ē
Whether you like Will Ferrell or not, ELF is one comedy that delivers the laughs time and time again whether youíve been naughty or nice. I have no idea how James Caan was able to keep a straight face during all these ridiculous shenanigans but clearly the manís got talent. Most people have at least one Christmas flick they watch religiously every year but if you donít, I highly recommend this one. Iím personally a bit biased because of my distaste for Ferrell but if I can get past that here, then the rest of you should have a blast with this flick.
Documentaries: There are a slew of documentaries here to choose from adding up to about an hour and a half in all. Weíre shown everything about Buddyís world and his adventure from how they recreated the North Pole to how Will Ferrell fit into those tights. His bulge was all too noticeable.
Elf Karaoke: There are three songs to along with her if youíre looking to get into the Christmas spirit: Deck the Halls, Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas, guaranteed to annoy the entire family.
Deleted Scenes: Thereís just over ten minutes worth but the only one worth mentioning is the hilarious hockey game buddy participates in with his fellow elves in the North Pole.
Previews: Thereís a theatrical trailer, an online link to more previews and as I mentioned before this Collectorís Edition comes with a ton of cool stuff like magnets, a soundtrack CD, gift tags and your very own Buddy the elf stocking.
