WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A man distraught with the idea of his wife with another man goes on a journey of sexual exploration when he stumbles upon an unusual sex club. Things take a turn for the worse when heís publicly embarrassed and begins to suspect foul play when a girl goes missing.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
EYES WIDE SHUT is one of the most famous movies of all time. Or maybe I should say Ďinfamousí rather than Ďfamousí. People will always remember it for being Kubrickís last film, or for being the last time Tom and Nicole appeared on screen together. When a film has an association with two of the most popular and talented actors of our generation and with one of the best and most controversial directors, itís going to be remembered. Unfortunately, the content of the film has always received a wide variety of reviews.

Despite the mixed responses it received when it opened, Iíve always been impressed with EYES WIDE SHUT. I was disappointed edits were made after Kubrickís death and saddened he died before he was finished with it, although I guess we donít know for sure whether or not he would have made any changes. As it stands, Eyes is a fine film and is clearly a Kubrick film. Every shot and every decision seems to be purely Kubrick and thatís a great thing in my opinion.

The highlights are the amazing performances from Tom and Nicole. Controversy surrounded them during filming when reports came out that they had to have sex coaching for their scenes. That may or may not be true, but the end results are two great performances by two of the best actors in film today. I never felt either of them received enough credit for this film, and if youíre a fan of either, this film is a must watch.

The film is not without its problems. In typical Kubrick fashion, there are scenes that make you scratch your head and they tend to throw off the pacing. I would have liked more focus with the main story and the relationship between the two leads. That was more interesting to me than the sex club story. Speaking of which, the infamous and strategically placed CGI figures are now removed and all the sex acts can now be viewed. Personally, it was much ado about nothing as the new footage is neither sexy nor worthy of all the controversy.
THE EXTRAS
The Last Movie: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut (43:08): Just about everyone in Kubrickís life came in and talked about the late Stanley Kubrick. His wife and kids even gave some rare interviews about him. But what makes this feature great is that they looked at his life from both a personal and professional angle and that gives us a great insight into who he was. This is one of the best featurettes youíll find on any DVD or Blu-ray.

Lost Kubrick: The Unfinished Films of Stanley Kubrick (20:19): Obviously we all know about A.I. being made by Spielberg, but there were a couple of other big movies that he never got around to. He wanted to make a film about Napoleon and had actually put some effort into it and even went as far as to write a screenplay for it. He also had a film about WWII and the holocaust. He wanted to make the definitive film about the subject. This one didnít come quite as close to being made. This is a great featurette and a must watch for all Kubrick fans.

DGA D.W. Griffith Award Acceptance Speech (4:03): He seems to be reading the speech from a teleprompter, but it doesnít change the fact that what heís saying is interesting. He gives a great speech and this is definitely worth the time.

Interview Gallery (35:19): Tom, Nicole and Steven Spielberg give interviews about Kubrick and making the film. I always felt this film was the driving catalyst for the Tom and Nicole split. I have nothing to base that off of, but both of them discuss how hard the film was on their marriage. They all give great interviews and have plenty of nice things to say about Kubrick.

Trailers and TV Spots: I usually donít talk about trailers or TV spots, but I always remembered these as being great and I enjoyed watching them again. These were some great previews for the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Iím one of the bigger fans of EYES WIDE SHUT out there and after repeat viewings, I still really enjoy this film. It does have some problems, but Kubrick has a very distinct style and itís not for everyone. This Blu-ray release is wonderful and makes a worthy addition to any collection.
