WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Constantly the victim in his older brother's homemade videos, aspiring novelist Frankie (Hunnam) tries to block the latest venture: an embarrassing sex tape.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Frankie (Charlie Hunnam, Undeclared) has been living in a trailer in the middle of nowhere. It seems the best possible way to avoid his brother, Bruce (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids), who fancies himself a director, in that he videotapes Frankie in humiliating situations, like the moment he found out his fiancée cheated on him.

After some coercing by his mother (Saturday Night Live alum Nora Dunn), Frankie leaves his failed novels and Death Valley behind and heads back home to see Bruce, who is fresh out of rehab. He may have set the drugs down, but the camera is still in hand. So he does what any asshole older brother would do: film his younger brother’s failed sexual encounter with a loose cannon named Lassie (Lizzy Caplan, Bachelorette). And then he plans to do what any asshole older brother would do afterwards: sell it.

Bruce intends to hawk the tape to director Jack Knoll (Chris Noth, better known as Mr. Big on Sex and the City), but it ends up online before the deal can go down. This sends the boys on a hunt for the videotape, allowing them to encounter a post-op tranny played by Ron Perlman (Hellboy), should that be in the wheelhouse of things you find funny.

Written and directed by Jordan Roberts (2004’s Around the Bend), Frankie Go Boom (which, now on home video, ditches the 3,2,1… that accompanied it to theaters) is filled juvenile humor (“That ass is harder than a dick on Viagra!”) and hijinks (accidentally launching a pig into a swimming pool). Such humor can work and has plenty of times before, but when the filmmakers show a swine puking up a condom, well, they may have stooped too low. It wants to shock but is instead just embarrassing for the entire cast.

Roberts’ most notable credit to date is as the narration writer for the US version of March of the Penguins. It makes me a little nauseous to think what his first draft must have included.

THE EXTRAS
Behind the Scenes (7:50) uses interviews and on-set footage to promote the movie.

Deleted and Alternate Scenes (10:58): Jordan Roberts introduces each of these six scenes that didn’t make the final cut of Frankie Go Boom.

Pig in the Pool (1:21): This brief piece shows the actual pig used in the movie and the fake one used for catapulting.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Frankie Go Boom has a solid cast working with an amateur script doing embarrassing things (namely Pearlman portraying a post-op transsexual). The humor (if you consider vomiting pigs amusing) is so juvenile that it’s easy to imagine writer/director Jordan Roberts skimming through recent National Lampoon’s entries and tweaking for his movie. Special features include a brief featurette, deleted/alternate scenes and a piece devoted to the pig launch.
