WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Hard hitting, fast talking, tough as nails private eye Malone is thrown for a loop when he intercepts a case containing “the meaning of love” which bad guys are coming out of the woodwork to take back. With nothing but a sexy client to go on, Malone is set upon finding answers.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Much like Thomas Jane’s recent directorial debut DARK COUNTRY, GIVE ‘EM HELL MALONE didn’t get a whole hell of a lot of promotion or hype which is a true shame as both films are most certainly worth a watch. After catching the trailer awhile back I knew MALONE would be my kind of party and I’m pleased to say it shook me all night long (well, for an hour and a half anyway). The violence was over the top, the fifties era was a bumping and the story was a noir private eye affair that was a cross between DICK TRACY and what MAX PAYNE should have been.

Now I compare this story to DICK TRACY because of the time period yes, but also because of the crazy characters found therein. The many villains lined up to get a case back from Malone are straight out of comic book fare, which works fine and makes for some fun entertainment. Some of their dialogue is a stretch, but each character goes with the flow, enjoying their roles as the plot thickens. The fact that this baby is a hard R in the language and violence category is a definite plus, and quite frankly I don’t see how they could have done this any other way.

Thomas Jane rocks as Malone (LOVE the opening monologue) and I’m happy the guy has decided to diversify himself with a good many roles as of late. The man can do anything and still reel me in (case in point, I actually watched a few episodes of his HBO series HUNG). Ving Rhames also did well as Boulder, the reluctant villain with a heart of gold. The characters and acting were what you’d expect in this sort of setup as I said, but that’s what made the movie for me, something outside the box that wasn’t afraid to break some rules. The fact that they slapped a “to be continued” on the end was also cause for my smile to spread ear to ear. Also, everything dealing with Malone’s mother was pure gold.

GIVE ‘EM HELL MALONE was one of those situations where I knew I’d love it simply because of my enthusiasm for all things Thomas Jane. The fifties gangster era was a bonus, and the comic book theme added a nice flavor to the mix as well as a feast for the eyes on Blu-ray thanks to the boastful color scheme. I just hate how some of the best action flicks are all coming straight to DVD these days instead of blowing the doors off a theater near you. These movies have a lot of potential and a fire some of us are dying to see. I’m hoping this is just a phase, because Malone deserves better.
THE EXTRAS
Interviews: The one special feature here is a three part interview process with Thomas Jane, Elsa Pataky and Doug Hutchison. They’re pretty cut and dry, but Jane’s funny as hell as he’s being annoyed by a beeping sound in the background and though Elsa doesn’t say much it’s also fun to hear from Hutchison who’s no stranger to stand out villain roles like these (he played a very special kind of villain in PUNISHER WAR ZONE as well as BAIT). There is also a theatrical trailer for the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If you like shoot em ups, eccentric characters, Thomas Jane and gangsters this is a sure fire win for you. I’m a big fan of all the above and love nothing more than a hard hitting R rated action extravaganza to get my blood pumping. So if these are things you’re into, this movie should be next on your list.

Extra Tidbit: Look for Doug Hutchison in this current season of 24 as one of guys Jack's gonna kill the shit out of.
