WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After his uncle kills his dad and rips out his eyes on his would-be coronation day, bird god Horus joins forces with a mortal thief to get his power back and retake his rightful place on the CGI throne.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

What happened to Alex Proyas? THE CROW and the underrated DARK CITY suggested a visionary filmmaker with a promising career. Never could I have imagined that the same director could make a movie as dull and lifeless as GODS OF EGYPYT.

As it first gets going, GODS OF EGYPT sort of works for what it isa goofy, CGI-laden epic. With its bright and colorful tone, ornate costumes and sets, and bombastic score by Marco Beltrami, the movie has a certain charm and scale that seemed promising. However, it quickly wears out that welcome long before its 2+ hour run time is over. Hopes of this even being entertainingly bad were quickly extinguished by just how boring it is. There's some creative imagery and truly weird ideas (most of which follow no historical or mythical source material), but the movie just drags itself down in to utter nonsense.

The supposed big draw of this movie is the fantasy spectacle, but it's also the most laughable. You know those terrible moments of GGI that stick out, like Pierce Brosnan's impromptu parasailing in DIE ANOTHER DAY or the Scorpion King at the end of THE MUMMY RETURNS? This movie is filled with them constantly. A couple minutes in to their first fight, Gerard Butler and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau turn in to shiny computer generated statues and start flying through the air and going at it. And it's all downhill from there. Nothing in this movie looks real. The gods are portrayed as larger than the mortals so even scenes of the characters standing around talking clearly look greenscreened together. It's a CGI disaster.

Coupled with the lackluster, by-the-numbers script and the waste of a decent cast (including Black Panther Chadwick Boseman, Dardevil's Elodie Yung, Geoffrey Rush and even Bryan Brown), there's not much in GODS OF EGYPT to recommend. Maybe if you're looking for brainless eye candy to point your eyes toward as you eat popcorn, but barely even then.

THE EXTRAS

The Blu Ray has a fair number of features, all trying to pretend the movie isn't absolutely terrible.

Deleted Storyboards (5:45): Pre-viz for two scenes, which dont look that much worse than the finished CGI.

A Divine Vision: Creating a Cinematic Action Fantasy (11:48): A standard Making Of that focuses on the scale of the film and its action.

Of Gods and Mortals: The Cast (10:52): A series of interviews with the cast trying their best to pretend the movie is great.

Transformation: Costume, Make-Up and Hair (11:10): The costumes are one of the few things that actually were impressive with this movie, so learn all about that!

On Location: Shooting in Australia (12:44): While most of the film was obviously shot against greenscreen, I guess they actually did film some in the land down under. Here's proof.

The Battle for Eternity: Stunts (11:38): Cast and crew outline some of the stunt work and fight choreography from the movie.

A Window into Another World: Visual Effects (10:58): The real heroes of the film: the people in charge of the unending barrage of special effects. Learn about how they brought all the CGI action to life.

A Digital Copy is also included.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

With a brainless story, unending poor special effects and an air of pointlessness, GODS OF EGYPT is a waste of $140 million. There are countless films better worth your time.

Extra Tidbit: Filmed in Australia, GODS OF EGYPT features a lot of the same actors and crew from MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

This movie was awesome, I don't get it.

Great effects, good story, likable characters, never boring....this movie didn't deserve the hatred. Fun all the way!
