WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A wealthy businessman (Tyler Perry) crosses paths with a down-on-her-luck single mother (Thandie Newton). After first merely trying to improve her lot in life, he finds himself drawn to her- endangering his fragile relationship with his fiancee (Gabrielle Union).
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I'm not much for Tyler Perry. I know there's a big audience for his films (with them always raking in the dough- regardless of reviews), but it's not my bag. While they're maybe not quite as bad as hardcore Christian films like COURAGEOUS, the heavy-handed morality, and holier-than-thou attitude that pervades his film is a turn off to me- although some might say they just preach good, solid values. I just so happen to prefer shades of grey.

However, it should be said that Perry is improving a bit as a filmmaker- with GOOD DEEDS being night and day in terms of polish with his first few films. Maybe he has a good film in him, but this is just another Perry vehicle. It's not as dumb as the MEDEA movies, but it's just as simplistic. Gee- how much do you want to be the good, humble Tyler Perry will ditch his materialistic finance for the down-on-her-luck single mom? At least Union tries to make her character a little more likable than usual for this kind of thing- but it's all very boring, and by rote.

As an actor, Perry's OK, although it has to be said, Newton- who's occasionally amazing (given the right role) has a tendency to go overboard in the wrong parts, and she strikes me as pretty one-dimensional- although again, Perry doesn't seem to be in to stark realism, but rather- moralism.
THE EXTRAS
Not much here- other than two quick featurettes .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Unless I'm really off base, I'd be willing to bet that GOOD DEEDS isn't really going to be anyone's cup of tea unless they happen to enjoy Perry's blend of drama. For me, I'll have to wait until CROSS to really see whether Perry's got any appeal.
