Grosse Pointe Blank
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Martin Blank is a hit man stuck in a career rut when his 10-year reunion gives him the chance to rekindle an old flame and pull off one final job. Things are looking up until his archrival joins the party, aiming to blow the competition away.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
High Fidelity and GROSSE POINTE BLANK are two of my favourite movies ever. The 90s were definitely a good era for John Cusack (even though High Fidelity didnít actually come out until 2000). High Fidelity might have a slight leg up on GROSSE POINT BLANK because of my love for music and a couple previous jobs that entailed me working at a record store, but this review isnít about that movie.
GROSSE POINTE BLANK is one of those movies that takes a really silly premise and turns it not only into a good movie, but instead turns it into a great one. Here are some reasons why you should watch GROSSE POINTE BLANK, if you havenít already:
1. Minnie Driver plays the coolest lady DJ to ever exist
2. Dan Aykroyd is the greatest heís been since Ghostbusters
3. John Cusack is in it and he plays a hitmanÖ a HITMAN
Ok, so those are the three big reasons why I think this movie is aces. Additionally, GROSSE POINTE BLANK a dark comedy that hits all its targets (pun KIND OF intended). Itís also a sweet, fun and honest look at the dysfunctional nature of a relationship, even if itís all told a little bit differently. This is a film for everyone that still holds up 15 years later; one that doesnít make the guy roll his eyes even though thereís romance and one that doesnít make a girl cringe when there are ridiculous action sequences. GROSSE POINTE BLANK is funny, endearing, awesome and a movie that I think everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.
With Disneyís infinite vault of money, you would think that they could afford to cough up some money to put towards special features for this anniversary edition of GROSSE POINTE BLANK. Sadly, they were either too cheap or too lazy to reward the fans of this film and weíre left with the film and the film only.
Like the disappointing Rocketeer Blu-ray that came out in late 2011, Disney apparently felt that they didnít need to include any special features for this anniversary edition of GROSSE POINTE BLANK. For that reason, the Blu-ray is definitely not worth picking up unless youíre upgrading all of your DVDs. I personally still would grab it because Iím one of those people and I happen to think that itís a pretty awesome movie. However, if youíre working on upgrading your collection on a budget and you already own it on DVD, GROSSE POINTE BLANK should definitely not be high on your priority list to pick up.
