WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Two boxing legends/rivals come out of retirement to settle a thirty year feud and find out, once and for all, who the real champ is.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I have to admit, when GRUDGE MATCH hit theaters (I didnít actually see it playing anywhere), I had no idea it existed. It wasnít until out own Chris Bumbray reviewed it that I found it what it was. And at that point, I took a double take. ďWhere did this come from,Ē I thought, I hadnít seen or heard a word of promotional banter about it. I can see the Ďon paperí appeal they were going foróRocky Balboa VS. The Raging Bull. Now if this had come out twenty years ago (and this story didnít more or less sum up the film ROCKY BALBOA), there would have been some serious buzz in the air, but it didnít and there wasnít. That said, much to my astonishment, it wasnít half bad.

Yeah, itís hard seeing these icons in their current state (Kim Basingerís aged well though), but if youíre fans of Stallone and De Niro, well, youíre fans of Stallone and De Niro, which will be enough to get you through this film, especially if youíre boxing fans as well. The Walking Deadís Shane (Jon Bernthal) adds a pleasant family dynamic, and Basingerís love interest is all right, but the Ďhartí of this film is in the comedic exploits of both Kevin Hart and Alan Arkin. Hart is especially hilarious and pretty much owns the screen whenever heís around. I laughed out loud far more than I expected to, and probably more times than this film deserves, but Iím a sucker for funny and this flick is definitely funny when it wants to be.

GRUDGE MATCH can be summed up as followsóthinking along the lines of 1-10 for films featuring actors past their prime in ridiculous situations (one being GOD AWFUL and ten being HELL YEAH THEY STILL GOT IT), weíve got nonsense like RED 2 and LAST VEGAS on the GOD AWFUL side, THE EXPENDABLES 1 and 2 on the HELL YEAH end of things, and this flick falling somewhere in the middle. Itís not smart or original, but itís fun, funny and has heart. I was pleasantly surprised.
THE EXTRAS
The Bull & the Stallion: This basically gives us the boxing angle via the shameless cash grab Rocky Balboa/Raging Bull angle used to make this flick viable. Again, twenty years ago people would have camped out for tickets to see this baby in theaters.

In the Ring with Kevin Hart: The heart and soul of this flick, Kevin Hart in all his glory. This dude deserves better than RIDE ALONG though.

Kevin Hart Unedited: A couple more laughs from Hart, but nothing major.

Ringside with Tyson & Holyfield: I wish this wasnít here, as it ruins a big surprise, but they two former heavyweights weigh in on their scene and its hilarity.

Blow by Blow with Larry Holmes: Former heavyweight boxer Larry Holmes talks about his fight with Muhammad Ali. Iím all for this era, but Ali was before my time. Still cool though.

Alternate Opening/Alternate Endings: I like the other opening only because itís narrated by Dante, but itís nothing fantastic. As for the endings, I wonít say what they are, but thereís threeóone for a draw, and one for each of them winning. Theyíre all pretty good.

Deleted Scenes: There are six short ones that are hit and miss, so to speak, but since theyíre all so short I think they should have stayed in. I really liked the autograph one.

Previews: There are a few trailers, as well as a DVD and UltraViolet Copy of the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Donít get me wrong folks, itís still a rental through and through, but itís not the colossal train wreck youíd think it would be. Not to mention, itís got one of the funniest post-credit scenes Iíve ever seen. Itís an era thing, but if you Ďget ití, itís so ridiculously unbelievable youíll laugh yourself into tears.

Kim Basinger looks like shit

I dont know who you were looking at but the 2 leads were in phenomenal shape especially considering one of them is 70+, Bassinger looked like she was hit by a bus and had just went bankrupt buying an entire town!!
