WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) is a thirty-something slacker, still stuck in the mailroom of the New York daily newspaper he’s been working at for ten years. He harbors a major crush on assignment editor Darcy (Amanda Peet), and while trying to impress her, he passes himself as a travel writer, and ends up assigned a story in Bermuda. He ends up shipwrecked and washes up in Lilliput, a kingdom populated by tiny people.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Ugh. What else can you say about a film that takes a beloved children’s classic, in this case Jonathan Swift’s GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, and turns it into a brainless Jack Black vehicle. Heck, from the first time he arrives in Lilliput, you’ll be looking at your watch, wondering how long it’s going to take before one of the tiny Lilliputians ends up in his anus. Answer: about five minutes.

Things don’t get much better from there, with Black at one point rescuing the kingdom from an inferno by peeing on it. Sigh.

It’s really an awful movie, obviously meant to cash in on the NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM movies. While I wasn’t a huge fan of those films- they’re Amblin’esque compared to this rubbish. The only upside is that the film features a few genuinely funny folks, with Chris O’Dowd and Billiy Connelly managing to wring a few laughs from the material. Hard to believe this was co-written by Nicholas Stoller, the man behind FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and GET HIM TO THE GREEK. I suppose that explains why Jason Segel ended up in this waste of his talent. And don’t even get me started on Emily Blunt. What’s an actress of her caliber doing in this?

As for Black- what the heck happened? Around the time SCHOOL OF ROCK came out, I thought we were in store for years of great Jack Black vehicules. Other than the moderately amusing KUNG-FU PANDA, and a great role in TROPIC THUNDER, he’s done nothing but garbage since. Shame.

THE EXTRAS
This blu-ray is absolutely loaded with extras- do if you happen to be a fan of the film, here’s what you’re in for:
I Don't Know...with Lemuel Gulliver A brief jokey featurette about the Bermuda Triangle.
Gag Reel
Deleted Scenes
Featurettes : nine in total, including Q & A with the director, actors, etc.
World Premiere footage
Theatrical trailer

There's also a bonus DVD version of the film and a digital copy .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
However much I hated GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, I suppose there’s a kiddie audience out there that will eat it up. It has a lot of zany gags, and a big TRANSFORMERS style robot at the end, so the kiddies might get a kick out of this. Everyone else- SKIP IT!
