Probably the real reason I had any faith in this film whatsoever was because of the excellent job 50 and Kilmer did in the underrated STREETS OF BLOOD. These guys were a killer team and I can only imagine that this is why they teamed up yet again for this flick. Now although GUN doesnít quite have the chops BLOOD did, I will say that Iím impressed with 50 Centsí acting prowess thus far. Sure, some might argue that playing a straight out the hood, thugged out gun runner isnít exactly Shakespeare (or far too removed from reality in his case) itís still obvious to me that not only is he trying but he has talent. Now speaking of far removed, Kilmer looks like heís one foot in the grave lately and it bothers me, not an angry bother but more of a sad one because I just canít understand why he doesnít seem to care anymore.
GUN is perfect for that slow night when nothing is going on and you just want to kick back for some mindless action. Thereís nothing here you havenít seen before but all around you feel like this cast is at least trying to give you a run for your money. That said, I loved seeing James Remar as a (wait for it) COP! I know, I couldnít believe it either and what was even funnier was the fact that heís working with a CI (can you tell I love DEXTER?). Machete makes a brief appearance to show off his badass shoes (seriously, Iíd love a pair of those) and then thereís a really hot chick from 90210 (Annalynne Mccord) to keep your eyes happy during the slow times, so really at the end of the day there wasnít much to complain about here as long as you know what youíre in for and donít have overly high expectations.
