WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Rich is a mid level gun runner with aspirations of moving up. As the game on the street starts to heat up, not only is Rich given the chance hes longing for, hes also reunited with an old friend Angel who quickly proves himself and joins Richs crew. Before long things start to turn sour and Rich realizes there might be a snitch in his ranks.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
At first glance it would be all too easy to pawn GUN off as what it truly is, a low budget, run of the mill, straight to DVD action vehicle that gives 50 Cent an excuse to jump in front of the camera but unlike a lot of these films, after watching it, I didnt feel the need to instantly flush this one down the toilet. Maybe its because I actually like 50 Cent, maybe its because I watched TOP GUN last week and needed an Ice Man fix or maybe I just feel sorry for the boys because this seems like they best they have to offer right now. Either way, GUN isnt fantastic by any stretch of the imagination but it wasnt nearly the crap shoot I expected.

Probably the real reason I had any faith in this film whatsoever was because of the excellent job 50 and Kilmer did in the underrated STREETS OF BLOOD. These guys were a killer team and I can only imagine that this is why they teamed up yet again for this flick. Now although GUN doesnt quite have the chops BLOOD did, I will say that Im impressed with 50 Cents acting prowess thus far. Sure, some might argue that playing a straight out the hood, thugged out gun runner isnt exactly Shakespeare (or far too removed from reality in his case) its still obvious to me that not only is he trying but he has talent. Now speaking of far removed, Kilmer looks like hes one foot in the grave lately and it bothers me, not an angry bother but more of a sad one because I just cant understand why he doesnt seem to care anymore.

GUN is perfect for that slow night when nothing is going on and you just want to kick back for some mindless action. Theres nothing here you havent seen before but all around you feel like this cast is at least trying to give you a run for your money. That said, I loved seeing James Remar as a (wait for it) COP! I know, I couldnt believe it either and what was even funnier was the fact that hes working with a CI (can you tell I love DEXTER?). Machete makes a brief appearance to show off his badass shoes (seriously, Id love a pair of those) and then theres a really hot chick from 90210 (Annalynne Mccord) to keep your eyes happy during the slow times, so really at the end of the day there wasnt much to complain about here as long as you know what youre in for and dont have overly high expectations.
THE EXTRAS
Previews: Theres a trailer for the feature film. Yep, pretty brutal.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
This may not be Val Kilmers best round about but 50 Cent plays the mean streets well and has more than a couple cool lines to seal the deal. Yes, its straight to DVD fodder but you could definitely do a lot worse than GUN.
