WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A disgraced fighter agrees to one final match, only to inadvertently become the prey in an international human-hunting expedition.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

1993ís HARD TARGET is most notable for being John Wooís first Hollywood production and for giving Jean Claude Van Damme one of the all-time great movie mullets. Iím not sure if thatís enough to warrant a sequel two decades later, but too badÖ you have one now.

HARD TARGET 2 is essentially a rehash of the first movie, which itself was yet another take on Richard Connellís famed MOST DANGEROUS GAME story. Itís standard DTV fare, but still fairly entertaining thanks to Scott Adkins. Adkins isnít a great actor, but he is a fantastic martial artist and thankfully the role here doesnít require much from him aside from running around the jungle and kicking people in the face. (Any scene in which he has to emote, such as the lame romantic subplot, are a chore.)

Director Roel Reine, whoís made a career cranking out sequels like this (most recently THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS 2), does his best to make HARD TARGET 2 look more expensive and polished then the budget probably allowed, with some solid camera work and cool visuals. He also keeps things moving at a quick pace with constant fights, shootouts, motorcycle chases, and other fun elements. Thereís nothing here that will particularly wow you, but I doubt youíll ever get bored either, which is a win when it comes to these kind of movies.

Adkins gets some supporting help from HOLLOW MAN victim Rhona Mitra and Jango Fett himself, Temuera Morrison. However, the best performance comes from Robert Knepper, who plays an over the top villain who intimidates people by crushing scorpions with his bare hands or dramatically filleting sushi on his desk. Itís a delightfully sleazy role that helps to make the movie itself a little more memorable.

THE EXTRAS

The Blu Ray set comes with a smattering of short featurettes, as well as a DVD and Digital Copy.

Commentary by director Roel Reine, actors Scott Adkins and Robert Knepper, composer Trevor Morris and cameraman Rolf Dekens: This is Reineís show, with the director calling random cast and crew members for a few minutes at a time to get their thoughts on the movie. The director is enthusiastic and has plenty to say about shooting the film in Thailand, his love of John Woo and the original movie, and much more. Not a bad commentary.

Deleted Scenes (9:47): A handful of brief scenes that donít add much, other than more of the romantic interest and a bit of gratuitous PG-13 T&A.

Deleted Shots Montage (2:00): This literal collection of random shots (including various scenery) is laughable.

A Fighting Chance: Behind the Scenes of HARD TARGET 2 (5:15): This general BTS piece covers a little bit of everything: Adkinsí stunts and fights, continuing the story of hte original, and the filmís production in Thailand.

HARD TARGET 2: Through the Lens (2:43): A very short look at how Reine shot the movie very quickly and for little money. Kudos to him for making the finished film look as polished as it does.

Into the Jungle: On Location of HARD TARGET 2 (2:25): Another very brief featurette, this time showing how they used Thailand to stand in for Myanmar.

Thrill of the Hunt (3:13): Meet the hunters who chased Scott Adkins (the characters, not the actors).

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

HARD TARGET 2 is entertaining for what it is, mostly thanks to Scott Adkins and some solid action throughout. Iíve definitely seen much worse direct-to-video films (including some from director Roel Reine).

Extra Tidbit: Thereís a hilarious ode to John Woo with random doves flying around Scott Adkins while heís sleeping in one scene.
