WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In the wake of a devastating divorce, a socially awkward, lonely man develops feelings for his new age voice animated operation system, Samantha.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Remember how cool it was, back in 95, when THE NET came out and we saw how Sandra Bullock could basically live her entire life online? It was a cool concept. Hell, I order ninety percent of what I buy either on eBay or amazon, so Iím as much a victim of the times as anyone. I love my computer, but I donít think I could date it, even if it did talk dirty to me with Scarlett Johanssonís voice. This film is a disturbing, yet beautifully sad reminder of just how alone we can be in this busy world. That said, Iíd never be lonely enough to strangle a chick with a dead cat. Ever.

Joaquin Pheonix plays the beat down, pathetic character, Theodore like a champ. HeísÖstrange, at best, and his entire persona is summed up nicely by Olivia Wildeís character when she calls him a ďreally creepy dude.Ē Oh, and FYI, thereís no gap of logic imaginable that could make me believe Olivia Wilde would ever be desperate enough to date (let alone make out with) Theodore. GTFO with that nonsense. Amy Adamsí weird character, yes, but Olivia Wilde? Hell no. I wish theyíd given us more details about what broke him and his wife up, but I suppose it doesnít really matter. Also, there is a ton of fabulous imagery in this movie, like the owl on the big screen, itís full of these scene stealing moments which truly elevate this very sombre tale. And I donít know what video game he was playing, but that potty mouthed little snow man guy rocks and thatís one game Iíd love to play. Amy Adamsí ďsuper momĒ game, on the other hand, not so much.

HER is beautiful when it comes down to the exploration of Samanthaís limitless boundaries, and Scarlett Johansson is fantastic, yes, even without a bodyóthough Iíll give mad props to the body double experience they were trying to pull off near the end. It had my full attention. Of course, I still donít know how I feel about the whole OS idea. I suppose itís great to know that even the most socially awkward person could find and experience love (which is beautiful), but when she starts going all Skynet with the other OSí and they all decide to go offline and doÖwhatever, well, thatís a tad too creepy for me. Iíll stick to human relationships. Sure, theyíre messy, and you canít turn them off nearly as easily as you can a computer, but ultimately the payoff is worth the trouble.
THE EXTRAS
Her: Love in the Modern Age: This has nothing to do with the movie, safe for itís a bunch of peeps talking about love and relationships. No dead cat love though.

How Do You Share Your Life With Somebody: Pretty much one big trailer/scene compilation from the film. Useless really.

The Untitled Rick Howard Project: A making-of piece that shows us a lot of behind the scenes stuff for key scenes in the movie. Not nearly the amount of substance I was hoping for considering the high concept premise.

Previews: There are a couple trailers as well as a DVD and Ultraviolet Copy of the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Thereís an interesting idea here, impossible and scary as it may be, but thereís also a lot of weird filler that may or may not make you raise an eyebrow. Itís worth checking out, but I canít see you sitting down with this flick more than once.

I seriously don't understand where all the praise for this movie is coming from, it wasn't that great. As for the review, sounds bang on to me, how the hell can anyone review a film like this seriously? There are some serious ideas here, but they're buried beneath a pile of nonsense. But hey, like Kivzirrum said, to each their own.

My favourite film of 2013. Gave it 5 stars and even though I'm pretty lenient, I don't throw those around. The other commenters have already called out J.A. but I'm going to join the chorus. Lines like "GTFO with that nonsense" and to a lesser extent "but that potty mouthed little snow man guy rocks and thatís one game Iíd love to play" fully strip the review of its credibility.

Judgmental review that misses the point of the movie. Theodore isn't just "a creepy dude" and honestly, when his OS is actually genuinely intelligent and alive--what's wrong with dating it? Especially when she's as awesome as Samantha is. Finding the situation "disturbing" is kind of close-minded, isn't it? It makes Theodore happy--well, for a while (though I won't spoil anything the review doesn't give away). I adored this movie, and have been waiting for it to come out on DVD so I can

That was the shittiest, dumbest, most egotistic review I've ever read by an employee on this site.

What VanHogTrio said.

Also, thanks for giving away the ending to the movie, J.A. I'm sure lots of people curious about getting the BluRay read your review and not only think the movie sounds crappy (creepy), but also don't want to see it now because they know the end.

Reviewer kind of misses the point of the movie...

I loved this film. The main central idea of this movie is NOT the "dating your OS" trope, that's just window dressing for what this movie is really about, which is someone moving on with their life after a devastating relationship failure. As someone who has been through a divorce myself, I readily identified with Theodore's situation and the way Phoenix plays his crippling loneliness is brilliant, and not a "really creepy dude" at all, in fact it was Olivia Wilde's character who revealed

Gorgeous imagery throughout, and pay special attention to the colours used for each main character - each has their own particular palette, and Theo's changes over the course of the movie and reflects his emotional state. Brilliant film - 4.5 stars.
