John Stalberg Jr.
HIGH SCHOOL is one of those “clever” stoner titles. Without seeing the cover for the film, a trailer or a poster, you’d assume that it was a coming-of-age story or maybe even a documentary. What you get instead is a rather ridiculous story about a boy coming to terms with f*cking up his life by attempting to f*ck up everyone else’s.
The premise of the film is funny enough… the day after the school valedictorian smokes pot for the first time, his school puts a mandatory drug test in place, leading to shenanigans. I thoroughly enjoy a ridiculous stoner flick every now and again, so I settled in for some laughs. If nothing else, at least Adrien Brody looked like he would deliver one of the more colourful performances of his career. For me, it just didn’t deliver what I had hoped. I find that a lot of the time, my issue with comedies is that they’re overhyped. Unfortunately that’s not the case with HIGH SCHOOL since the film didn’t get that much attention. The laughs are just too few and far between.
I feel like HIGH SCHOOL could’ve been something awesome with the right talent attached to it. The leads didn’t really do anything for me though. They didn’t have enough character to really pull off the kind of comedy that I think director John Stalberg Jr. was looking for. Had this movie been cast a bit differently, I think HIGH SCHOOL would’ve come out as a completely different and potentially awesome stoner flick.
