WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A hobo (Hauer) arrives in a decrepit town and sets out to rid it of all of its villains using his trusty shotgun.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Just in case you needed some sort of proof that there was nothing more dangerous than a hobo with a shotgun…

The titular bum (Rutger Hauer, why not?) arrives by train in Scum Town (nèe Hope Town), ruled over by the sadistic The Drake (Brian Downey) and his sons, Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). The Drake is the sort of guy that decapitates his own brother in front of a sidewalk full of onlookers. The hobo will have none of it and so like any noble citizen, he purchases a shotgun from a pawn shop, partners with a hooker (Molly Dunsworth) and seeks out the justice his new town deserves.

Does he ever.

Hobo with a Shotgun, fans know, spawned from the mock trailer featured in the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino exploitation homage Grindhouse (it has the second-highest number of views on YouTube after only Machete, also turned into a feature). And like the epic RR/QT effort, Jason Eisener’s vigilante trash-and-guts-a-thon has no shame. And why should it?

Here’s a sampling of the mayhem spewed throughout: the hobo is paid to eat glass; one of the brothers splatters a victim’s foot with a carnival-sized mallet; The Drake takes a razorblade-covered baseball bat to a man’s torso, spilling his guts on the ground; a school bus full of kids is set aflame…That’s all in the first 40 minutes.

Hobo with a Shotgun gets off hard from its own blood and vulgarity. So will the target crowd, who gets everything the title sells: There is a hobo with a shotgun and he spills a lot of blood. And yes, as the Grindhouse trailer promises, even Santa Claus gets his head blown off.
THE EXTRAS
Shotgun Mode: With this feature activated, a target icon will appear onscreen throughout the movie. When accessed, fans are given a “behind-the-scenes look at extra blood, guts and bits of awesome glory!”

Shotgun Mode Clips (1:46:27): Or, as an alternative, the disc has each of the clips laid out separately. There are 44 in all, which can be viewed together or separately. With titles such as “The Blood Sprinkler Dance,” “Chest Carving,” “When Life Gives You Razors…,” “Easily the Worst Death Ever,” and “Glory Hole Full of Hobo,” these clips may be the first thing fans go to after watching the feature.

Commentary with director Jason Eisener and actor Rutger Hauer: This is a fairly relaxed track, with the pair reminiscing about the production like a couple of old friends.

Commentary with Eisener, writer John Davies, producer Rob Cotteril, and Grindhouse trailer “Hobo” David Brunt: The more energetic of the commentary tracks, this one has all four participants having a blast dishing out stories from the making of Hobo with a Shotgun.

More Blood, More Heart: The Making of Hobo with a Shotgun (45:21): This thorough documentary covers every aspect of Hobo with a Shotgun, including the original Grindhouse trailer, the cast (and why original Hobo Brent didn’t get the lead role), the crazy lines in the movie, and much more. Like the “Shotgun Mode Clips,” fans will get a real kick out of this documentary.

Deleted Scenes (5:58): There are three here: “A Stroll Through Hope Town,” “The Landlord” and “Montage.”

Alternate Ending (0:33): Too brief to change much, this clip is shows the outcome of a character’s fate.

Video Blogs: There are nine short video blogs here, which can be viewed together or separately: “Live from Dartmouth,” “The Goods,” “Day 4 Wrap,” “Interview with Niv,” “Rookie Cop,” “Breaking News: Chaos in the City,” “Blood Truck,” “Budget Cuts,” and “Waves of Blood.”

Camera Test Reel (3:27) offers a series of tests with the Red Camera.

Fangoria Interviews: In separate interviews, star Rutger Hauer (11:20) and director Jason Eisener (33:09) sit down to discuss the making of Hobo with a Shotgun. As a lot of the information is available in the commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage found elsewhere on the disc, these might be better to skim through.

HDNet: A Look at Hobo with a Shotgun (5:13) is a brief, standard promotional piece.

Also included are Grindhouse Trailer Contest Winner: Hobo with a Shotgun, Hobo with a Shotgun Faux Trailer Contest Winner: Van Gore, Red Band U.S. Theatrical Trailers, and Canadian TV Spots.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Not that it needed to, but Magnolia Home Entertainment has done an incredible job with this Collector's Edition Blu-ray of Grindhouse sensation Hobo with a Shotgun. Spilling with hours of special features (including two commentaries, a documentary and more) and impressive transfers, this BD is a must-own for fans of unapologetic, exploitative trash.

Couldn't disagree more. A great idea for a B-movie is wasted by complete lack of talent behind the camera. Instead of evoking 70s grindhouse classics, it reminded me of those awful Troma movies that came out almost weekly in the 80s. A good performance by Hauer is wasted in this garbage.
