Much like the Rock’s film, SNITCH, this flick deals with the drug world in a way that’s not wholeheartedly original, but won’t have you rolling your eyes either. I like Statham as a single dad trying to help his daughter’s world make sense in the wake of losing her mother. The ball starts rolling when his daughter slaps around a bully in her class, igniting the rage of her tweeker, hillbilly parents (Kate Bosworth plays the role of a strung out junkie a little too convincingly). Now her brother just happens to be the small town meth dealer with ambition (James Franco), who goes after Statham and digs up the ghosts from his past. This is all fine and dandy with me, as a matter a fact, I LOVE Franco as a villain, but much like all the other baddies here (and in any other Statham flick), they just fall short on a confrontational level. I love watching Statham beat the shit out of people, especially when they’re slimy bastards who deserve it, but he’s never truly met his match. The one and only time there was potential for it was in EXPENDABLES 2 when he was pit against Scott Adkins. I was so pumped. THAT had the potential of being an epic fight…but instead they watered it down to nothing in preparation for the Stallone/Van Damme fight. I’m still bitter.
HOMEFRONT brings nothing new to the world of cops, drugs and thugs, but that’s okay. There are some cool set pieces (Statham’s house and yard are to die for), great fight scenes, and a heartfelt bond between father and daughter. The story itself plays out a little blandly, and the ending is nothing to write home about. My biggest complaint is that Franco’s character didn’t push the villain envelope and become truly memorable. He could’ve been so much more, and Franco’s a great actor for villainy. I was hoping for bigger and better. Don’t give up on the evil gig, Franco, you’re perfect villain role is still out there waiting for you.
Standoff: Statham sure knows how to deal the pain, and the bad guys just keep coming back for more. Here’s a closer look at the beatdowns.
Previews: There are a slew of trailers as well as a DVD and Ultraviolet Copy of the film.
Extra Tidbit: Winona Ryder is still hot.
