So, is the film really that awful...? No, not even close. It certainly isn't great, but it at least attempts to do something different, playing against normal crime caper plot conventions by having the film stylized as a campy, slapstick, R-rated cartoon. The goal here, it would seem, was to combine two immensely different types of genres without feeling awkward or forced. While ultimately it fails, it does so with enough gusto that you can almost appreciate the ride anyway. In a way, its badness is also part of its appeal; when it's bad, it's laughably so, and when it's good, it makes for a goofily enjoyable guilty pleasure. Depending on your personality, the two halves combine into something strangely watchable.
I think people might be more forgiving of HUDSON HAWK and its disregard for reality if the writing were a little wittier. The offbeat dialogue, gags, and scenarios emit this sense of smirking, self-satisfaction at how clever it all is, when really, they never amount to anything more than mild amusement. Luckily, when you have something as off-the-wall as this, "mild amusement" is enough. So if you have some free time, enjoy cartoonish humor, and have a high threshold for all things "outlandish," give HUDSON HAWK a try.
Audio Commentary (with director Michael Lehmann): Ported over from the original DVD release, this is an engaging track that covers everything from the film's production to its negative reception.
The Story of Hudson Hawk (30:00): Bruce Willis chats it up with writer Robert Kraft in this relaxed featurette. Overall, there's a lot of material that goes without discussion here, as they never comment on the more notorious aspects of the film's production (aside from critical reaction and the like), but it's still worth a watch.
My Journey to Minerva (11:00): This "interview" has actress Sandra Bernhard (who played the villainous gold-seeking wife) offering up her memories on HAWK in very funny fashion.
Deleted Scenes (5:00): A collection of quick excised bits, sure to delight fans but bore everyone else.
Also included is a Trivia Track, a 'Hudson Hawk' Theme Music Video, and Previews.
