At this point, Iím not sure how much of the plot I can reveal without causing any spoilers, so Iíll proceed with caution in case youíre not aware of the major plot points. I will say that there is a point in the film where I actually cried. Not just watery eyes, but actual tears. And it wasnít just a quick cry, it lasted a while. Granted, Iím not a macho man or anything, but when a film is intense and involved enough to make a grown man (even a sissy like me) cry, itís a testament to the filmmakerís ability and the power of the story.
Youíve probably heard that the film starts out well and then ends poorly. I think the alternate version fixes that. I agree that the theatrical ending seemed pointless and unnecessary, creating more questions than answers. I was pleased with the new ending and how it changed the meaning and context of the film. Iím not sure what the popular public opinion is on the new ending, but when I watch this film again (soon), Iíll only watch the alternate version. The theatrical cut is dead to me.
I enjoyed almost every aspect of the film, but if I had one problem with it, it was the lack of exploration of the relationship between him and the infected beings. We had to take a leap at the end and that dynamic felt rushed. I would have liked to see more of him observing their behavior so the conclusions he came to at the end would seem more acceptable.
If youíre looking for a mindless action film and hoping to see Will Smith kill a bunch of zombies, then please donít watch this. Thatís not what youíll get and that wasnít the point of the film. This is a deeply moving film that happens to feature Will Smith and yes, at times killing mutated beings. However, thatís just a bonus to whatís an outstanding and intense film.
Animated Comics (21:52): There are four different ďcomicsĒ taking place all over the world and telling various stories about the beginning of the viral outbreak. I appreciated the original animation, but overall they were average. They wonít provide any further insight into the film, but if youíre a fan, they may be worth a gander.
