WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A former military scientist believes that he is the only survivor on earth after a mutated virus strand infects and kills the world’s population. With the sole companionship of his dog, he lives his days hoping he is not alone.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
There are two versions of the film in this DVD set and it’s important to note that the two versions are drastically different. It’s not just an alternate ending, it’s an ending that is a complete 180 degree turn from the theatrical version. It changes the context and meaning of the film and in my opinion, makes it more complete. If you haven’t seen the film yet, then I highly suggest you forget all the complaints you’ve heard and watch this alternate version to judge for yourself.

At this point, I’m not sure how much of the plot I can reveal without causing any spoilers, so I’ll proceed with caution in case you’re not aware of the major plot points. I will say that there is a point in the film where I actually cried. Not just watery eyes, but actual tears. And it wasn’t just a quick cry, it lasted a while. Granted, I’m not a macho man or anything, but when a film is intense and involved enough to make a grown man (even a sissy like me) cry, it’s a testament to the filmmaker’s ability and the power of the story.

You’ve probably heard that the film starts out well and then ends poorly. I think the alternate version fixes that. I agree that the theatrical ending seemed pointless and unnecessary, creating more questions than answers. I was pleased with the new ending and how it changed the meaning and context of the film. I’m not sure what the popular public opinion is on the new ending, but when I watch this film again (soon), I’ll only watch the alternate version. The theatrical cut is dead to me.

I enjoyed almost every aspect of the film, but if I had one problem with it, it was the lack of exploration of the relationship between him and the infected beings. We had to take a leap at the end and that dynamic felt rushed. I would have liked to see more of him observing their behavior so the conclusions he came to at the end would seem more acceptable.

If you’re looking for a mindless action film and hoping to see Will Smith kill a bunch of zombies, then please don’t watch this. That’s not what you’ll get and that wasn’t the point of the film. This is a deeply moving film that happens to feature Will Smith and yes, at times killing mutated beings. However, that’s just a bonus to what’s an outstanding and intense film.
THE EXTRAS
It should be noted that the Blu-ray release of I AM LEGEND contains many more special features, including some in-depth featurettes into the making of the film.

Animated Comics (21:52): There are four different “comics” taking place all over the world and telling various stories about the beginning of the viral outbreak. I appreciated the original animation, but overall they were average. They won’t provide any further insight into the film, but if you’re a fan, they may be worth a gander.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Obviously, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and can easily recommend it to everyone. Warner Brothers has started to market the DVD as an action packed thrill ride and I’m afraid that will attract, and then disappoint a lot of people. This is an intelligent, deeply intense film that will hold you to the edge of your seat the entire runtime. Don’t even bother renting it, go buy it and thank me later.
