WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Itís the Ice Age and and three different animals form a ragtag team that helps a young child find its parents. A giant Mammoth, a sloth, and a Sabertooth all wine, fight, and stumble around in this cold world of animation. Itís supposed to be a fun family affair! Yay!
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
ICE AGE was better than I expected but disappointing on the same note. It is watchable, but is so sub-standard and tired, not to mention poorly voice acted that it seemed like a bad Disney feature but itís not even a Disney feature. I have a lot of beefs with this movie, probably made worse after watching a CLASSIC like ROBIN HOOD recently. The animation is just very shoddy in a lot of places. The backgrounds and the humans look just awful. I also think that the voice acting was totally off. Ray Romano just sounded horrible and totally wrong as a Mammoth. I dig John Leguizamo and Denis Leary but they arenít that great either. The whole affair just seemed to be thrown together with no real emotional backbone as seen in a plethora of Disney classics. ICE AGE thinks it has the story but it really doesnít work here.

The only element I really dug from ICE AGE is Scrat. His whole deal is just good old fashioned hilarious and fun. In short, if you traded Romano and co for some unkown good voice talents, polished the animation, re-wrote a good script, then you might have something. The kids will kill me but ICE AGE is as average as they come. ICE AGE belongs in the Ice Age.
THE EXTRAS
Fox loaded this DVD set up over two discs.

Disc 1 >

Commentary by Director Chris Wedge and Co-Director Carlos Saldanha > Wedgeís commentary is pretty darn dorky and disinteresting. Thereís a lot of enthusiasm from him and Saldanha but I wasnít feeling it. Again, please donít tell us what we are looking at. Tell us everything we donít see or know. Donít state the obvious.

Deleted Scenes > Thereís a handful of omitted scenes here and some of them are cute and others well, arenít. You can view these separately or have them incorporated back into the film which I will get to in a sec.

Nutty Movie Mode > This is really part of the deleted scenes. When you select this option, an acorn will appear during the film and when you select it, tada! you head to a deleted scene. Why they separate these, weíll never know.

Disc 2 >

First off, this discís menu is killer!

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown Trailer > This trailer is pretty good as animated oneís go. Itís got Scrat doing his funny schtick (which works) and a Vanilla Ice jingle.

Extreme Cool View > This is a kick butt feature! You watch the movie on an ice palette that shows tons of trivia while another box has filmmaker videos and stuff by Natural History experts. Its fun, entertaining, and you learn something. Better than the feature.

Gone Nutty: Scratís Missing Adventure > Loved it! This short has more fun and entertainment value than the whole feature that is ICE AGE. Scrat just canít seem to keep that acorn in his possession.

Sid on Sid >> 3 min > This is a post reaction of Sid watching the movie doing his best to do an MST3K but it doesnít quite work. No funny. No time.

Scrat Reveals > These must have been TV promo animation spots which are so pretentious that they are funny. All of them involve the Fox logo hindering Scratís mission.

International Ice Age > This is a segment that shows off the film in other languages. Fun times as always. German is my favorite. Zieg Heil!

Under the Ice >> 14 min > This behind the scenes featurette is broken into segments covering. There is some funny stuff here with Ray Romano (who I still think was miscast) doing what he does best. You get to see the cast and some of the animation process.

Trailers > Thereís more icy advertisements to watch including the good old anti-piracy PSA.

Games > A collection of overly simplistic but semi-fun DVD gamesÖfor the kids.

Animation Progression > A comprehensive look at animation from sketches to the fully finished product. A great feature for aspiring young animators.

Galleries > Yet another unique take on an old feature, this one lets you select the best pictures and make your own play gallery.

DVD Rom > The Rom has more games, printouts, etc. Even more stuff for the cool edition.

Bunny Animated Short > Bunny is an Academy Award winning short by Chris Wedge which I remember seeing and liked it a lot.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
ICE AGE is pretty average but has some entertaining moments, especially for the kids. The DVD however, is packed to the brim with some fun, unique features that count for something. If you liked the movie, the DVD is worth picking up. The shorts and Cool View Version all are great additions. Again, I couldnít get over the voice acting or the shoddy animations.
