WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Reed Fish is the local nice guy in his small hometown of Mud Meadows, beloved by everyone and ready to marry to his long time sweetheartÖuntil his high school crush returns from college to complicate things.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
As IíM REED FISH started, it began to remind me of another quirky indie comedy, one that annoyed me more than it entertained me (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE). When they pulled out a ďzorseĒ (half zebra, half horse), I was getting flashbacks to the liger and tots and bo staffs and all the other terrible stuff from the movie that everybody in the free world seems to love except me. Thankfully for my sanity, the similarities between the two films soon ceased and IíM REED FISH instead settled down in to an enjoyable little coming-of-age movie centered in small town life.

Iím a big fan of Jay Baruchel from the underrated, sorely missed TV show UNDECLARED (he was also part of Seth Rogenís posse in KNOCKED UP) and as the title character he plays the same kind of instantly likable, semi-nerdy guy. Baruchelís got a great sense of comic timing and delivery and even though Reed Fish may make some less-than-intelligent decisions during the movie, itís hard not to root for the guy based on the actor alone. Thereís also a nice supporting cast populating the rest of Mud Meadows, including Alexis Bledel (Glimore Girls), Schuyler Fisk (ORANGE COUNTY), Katey Segal (Married With Children) and Chris Parnell. All the characters are realistically conceived and relatable throughout, without any clear cut heroes and villainsójust average, everyday people.

The story of IíM REED FISH isnít really anything new (guy growing up in a small town, torn between two girls), but there is a fairly clever twist and a great WTF?! moment that pops up unexpectedly and skews the rest of the movie. I wonít give it away, but it did make me sit up and pay attention to everything that followed. The script, written by the real Reed Fish, also becomes a little foolproof, with things like pacing issues, cheesy dialogue and moments of made-for-TV drama creatively explained.

Itís not a movie that I would recommend proactively seeking out immediately, but if youíre looking for a low key yet enjoyable indie film, you might want to look up REED FISH.
THE EXTRAS
Behind The Scenes (6:24): Find out who the real Reed Fish really is, along with some other interviews with cast and crew.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
IíM REED FISH is a harmless independent movie that has a fair bit of humor, solid performances and a few little tricks up itís sleeve.

Extra Tidbit: I took a class with Schuyler Fisk at college. Who wants to touch me?
