In American romantic comedies, the background stuff usually consists of blind ferrets, defecating cats, babies, farts, or any combination thereof. In British romantic comedies, the background is populated by glib, droll, and periodically very amusing characters. This is why IMAGINE ME & YOU (a British flick) succeeds just a little bit -- whereas if it had been just another American rom-com, it probably would have been a lot more obnoxious.
Basically, this one's as predictable and fluffy as any romantic comedy under the sun, but it's also got some very charming performances and a solid handful of unexpected chuckles. Of the two female leads, one (Piper Perabo) sports a rather unconvincing accent and doesn't have the chops to anchor a movie on her own, but the other (Lena Headey) is as lovely as she is a solid lil actress.
If LOVE ACTUALLY, FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL and BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY represent your particular cup of rom-com tea, there's no reason you shouldn't find something to enjoy in IMAGINE ME & YOU. It's a fluffy little concoction that'll capably fill 90 minutes, but it's not destined to become anybody's newest favorite.
You'll also find about 20 minutes worth of cast & crew interviews, in which Parker, Perabo, Headey, and leading man Matthew Goode say nice things about their movie. Rounding out the disc are four deleted scenes (with optional commentary) and a three-minute touchy-feely director's statement.
