WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After the Earth repelled an alien takeover 20 years ago, there is worldwide peace and advanced technology created to combat a future attack. But when the extraterrestrials come back bigger and stronger than ever, it's going to take everything the new Earth Space Defense force has to beat them once again.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Man oh man, this wasn't the review I wanted to be writing. INDEPENDENCE DAY holds a special place in my heart as being the first PG-13 movie I watched in theaters... one that I subsequently became obsessed with and mildly terrified by (that Brent Spiner death scene, man!). But INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE takes everything I loved about the original film and destroys it. Picture me as the stupid girl (Alex from SAVED BY THE BELL: THE COLLEGE YEARS) in the first film, standing on top of the skyscraper with my eyes to the heavens, welcoming the aliens. Only instead of being beamed up (in my case, being entertained by the sequel) the ship opens up and sends a laser beam down to demolish everything. That pretty much sums up my experience RESURGENCE. How could I have been stupid enough to get my hopes up for this one?

For whatever reason, writer/director Roland Emmerich decided to take many of the same beats and plot points from the first movie, and amp it up to an even more ridiculous level. What could have been an interesting exploration into how the world reshapes civilization after an attempted alien invasion, including changes in weaponry, infrastructure, transportation, politics, etc. is only addressed on the surface level. Clearly what Emmerich cares more about is shoving CGI down our throats, writing cheesy, expositional dialogue, and throwing Vivica A. Fox off of skyscrapers. And don't even get me started on the incredibly idiotic idea to recast Mae Whitman's role, which she originated, to another Hollywood blonde, Maika Monroe. Though I will say, after seeing the movie I am glad the always awesome Whitman wasn't anywhere involved.

Especially with such amazing alien movies as ARRIVAL and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE this year, the fact we even have to mention INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE in the conversation is pretty laughable. If the original film holds a special place in your heart and you have somehow avoided seeing the sequel for this long, I beg you to forget it exists and certainly do not watch it. It is just going to ruin any nostalgia you feel for ID4 and waste over two hours of your life. With so many members of the cast back (minus Will Smith and Mae Whitman), I was rooting for RESURGENCE. But instead we were given another reminder of why rebooted movie franchises are not a great idea.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary with Director Roland Emmerich

Deleted Scenes- There are eight additional scenes, including an alternate opening, with optional commentary by Emmerich. In some scenes the CGI isn't completed, but kinda like the movie, none of these scenes are really anything to write home about. Alternate Opening; Bus Stop; White House Destruction; Charlie Asks Rain Out; Roadside Conversation; Queen's Chamber; President Lanford's Death; Catherine's Goodbye

The War of 1996- A fake news featurette giving background on the events that happened since the 1996 film, including interviews with Jeff Goldblum in character and more information on what happened to Will Smith's character, Captain Steve Hiller. This is kind of what I was hoping the movie itself would spend time focusing on.

It's Early ABQ- This is a weird, but funny one. To be honest I would've rather watched 2 hours of this instead of the actual movie. Fred Armisen plays the role of Terry Dudley, host of the morning show "It's Early, Albuquerque". Armisen interviews Judd Hirsch and Jeff Goldblum, all of whom are in character. Liam Hemsworth plays Goldblum's makeup artist.

Another Day: The Making of INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE- An almost hour-long look at the making of INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE. Admittedly, it's well done and as a movie nerd, I found it interesting. But for those that don't care about the inner workings of film making, it begs the question of whether you really want to spend another hour with this movie.

Gag Reel- 6+ minutes of the actors goofing off, including many instances of Jeff Goldblum riffing.

Concept Art- Aliens; AI; Humans; Locations; Original Presentation Images
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
I hoped for the best out of INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, but was left with the worst. Although the special features on the Blu-Ray are decent, leave well enough alone and don't even bother renting this one. It's not worth your time, money, or ruined childhood.

You're overly pessimistic....

There's no "neutral" choice, so I'll go with this, but I actually saw it yesterday and it was fine. Not great, not even really good, but also not terrible. The movie lacked all of the heart of the original, but I enjoyed the updated weaponry and ships. The action was enjoyable and it was tolerable as a popcorn film. Where it crashed and burned was the new heroes. None of them stood out in any way (and the ones thrown in for comic relief were actually terrible). Probably the coolest part

Probably the coolest part was the African Warlord, but as you said, his character was too over the top to actually be great. But 1/2 star? No, this was much better than that. Think of it like Starship Troopers with better VFX.

Bleh

I originally ignored this movie because of Roland Emmerich's egotistical remarks and rants. I figured I'd wait and spend $1.50 at redbox. Now, I may wait till its free on TV as long as no ratings company can track me doing so and there is absolutely nothing on TV and my toe nails don't need clipping.
