WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
As the face of law enforcement in the US for almost 50 years, J. Edgar Hoover was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Biopics arenít typically my favourite types of movies to watch, not because they arenít good, but because I feel like they only show a small fraction of someoneís life. Sometimes that can be ok, especially since itís impossible to really show all of it in a reasonable amount of time, but I always feel like so much is left out that really makes that person who they were (although I do recognize that it's necessary).

In the case of J. EDGAR, it isnít what the film left out so much as what the film adds in. Aside from what we know from his public life, Hoover was very secretive and there are a lot of things that people just donít know about his personal life. Clint Eastwood and writer Dustin Lance Black take a lot of liberties by speculating what they believe his life was like. This movie is definitely more like a historical fiction since almost all of the personal stuff has little to no facts to back it up.

Another issue I had with the film is that they didnít seem to want actors that looked the part; instead they chose actors who could act. Thatís fine and dandy since you do want people who can act, but as a result to me Leonardo DiCaprio is never really J. Edgar Hoover in the film, but rather heís just Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar Hoover makeup. Itís like that for all the actors in the movie. The makeup job itself must have been exceptionally tricky and with Blu-ray and everything being in HD, it's even trickier, but the makeup job for this film was not up to snuff. I know itís fake since they chose to age DiCaprio in the role instead of getting an older actor to portray Hoover in the later years, but it looks fake and on Blu-ray you can see the layers and layers of makeup caked onto the actors faces and for me, it was almost distracting.
THE EXTRAS
The only special feature included with this Blu-ray is J. Edgar: The Most Powerful Man In The World. This is pretty well a behind-the-scenes feature where the cast and the crew discuss their thoughts about J. Edgar Hoover and who he was as a person. They also discuss the other major people in Hooverís life and their roles in the film and they breakdown the complicated relationships that Hoover had.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
After watching the one special feature and the film, I have to say that there were a lot of mixed messages. The movie depicts him as this strong, smart and innovative leader while behind the scenes, the cast and crew have very different things to say about this man that I donít think were properly conveyed in the film itself. I know there is always embellishment with biopics, but I just think from what people said, the film isnít really that accurate as far as Hooverís personal life. It almost plays out like J. Edgar: The Untold and Completely Speculative Secret Love Story and it just did nothing for me.

It's not a bad movie by any means, but it's also not really that good either. That being said, if you like biographies or you're into history, J. EDGAR would probably be worth renting, but not necessarily worth owning, in my opinion.
