WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After Jane's (Natalie Portman) husband is almost killed by a gang of local outlaws, led by the notorious John Bishop (Ewan McGregor), she is forced to seek out her ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) to help save her family and her farm.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
JANE GOT A GUN had a notoriously difficult time making its way to audiences. The original director, Lynne Ramsay, was replaced; actors - such as Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper, and Jude Law - signed on to the project only to later back out; and Joel Edgerton had to pitch in to rewrite the script. But even with such a messy production process, it's important to note the film isn't a disaster. Of course, JANE is not reinventing the wheel when it comes to your typical western, especially due to a few depressing turns that incite our heroine on her way to revenge. However, the film utilizes its great cast, cinematography, and script to pull together an entertaining, character-driven story.

Easily the most intoxicating element of the film is Jane's relationship with her ex, Dan (Joel Edgerton). Edgerton and Portman have fantastic chemistry and it doesn't take long before you're rooting for the two of them to work it out... oh yeah, and to kill some bad guys. Both actors have a silent strength to their performances, while still showing signs of vulnerability and sorrow. JANE GOT A GUN is Portman's passion project, and its obvious that she put her heart and soul into the role.

But while the movie itself was decent, the Blu-Ray release is incredibly disappointing. The video transfer looks great, highlighting a warm color palatte that really brings the old west to life. However, there are zero special features. I guess, with all of the production problems, the last thing on anyone's mind was creating extras for the Blu-Ray. But come on... with a movie that had such an interesting history of production problems, it would've been really interesting to at least have a director's commentary to tell us how it all eventually came together.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
While the movie itself is worth a watch, the Blu-Ray release leaves little to be desired. Definitely suggest this as a rental instead of a purchase.
