I guess we can start with the under developed characters. They were definitely under developed, but I’m not sure it would have mattered because I think I would have disliked all of them anyway. That might be why the writer and director chose not to focus on developing their story. Then you could look at the story, which is full of holes and makes way too many assumptions that actually insult the audience. It’s not bad enough that I don’t know any of these characters, but do they have to make stupid decisions and overreact for no reason? Finally, we can look at the directing and editing, which had a little bit of style, but that wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of structure. This missed on so many levels that there’s really not enough time.
The one bright spot was the great Mos Def. He’s really proven to be a good actor with this and his role in 16 BLOCKS. I expect some big things from him in the future and his willingness to play the weak characters is going to pay off for him in the future. Fraser was average at best. It’s tough to buy him as a tough guy because…well…he doesn’t seem like a tough guy. Other than that, the rest of the cast was decent and given what they had to work with, that’s saying a lot.
