WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Two desperate Americans living in Brazil are forced to rely on a Nigerian to carry through a drug deal they’ve been waiting for. However, when things go wrong, their greed and impatience proves to get the best of them.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I bet there are people out there that will see this in the video store and think to themselves “Brendan Fraser, Mos Def and Scott Glenn? Well it can’t be that bad…”. Well folks, I’m here to tell you that there’s a reason this film wasn’t released in theaters and that’s because it’s not very good. It has nothing to do with the cast, it just turns out the film stinks in every other aspect.

I guess we can start with the under developed characters. They were definitely under developed, but I’m not sure it would have mattered because I think I would have disliked all of them anyway. That might be why the writer and director chose not to focus on developing their story. Then you could look at the story, which is full of holes and makes way too many assumptions that actually insult the audience. It’s not bad enough that I don’t know any of these characters, but do they have to make stupid decisions and overreact for no reason? Finally, we can look at the directing and editing, which had a little bit of style, but that wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of structure. This missed on so many levels that there’s really not enough time.

The one bright spot was the great Mos Def. He’s really proven to be a good actor with this and his role in 16 BLOCKS. I expect some big things from him in the future and his willingness to play the weak characters is going to pay off for him in the future. Fraser was average at best. It’s tough to buy him as a tough guy because…well…he doesn’t seem like a tough guy. Other than that, the rest of the cast was decent and given what they had to work with, that’s saying a lot.
THE EXTRAS
Making of Featurette (17:30): It’s pretty much your average making of featurette. It has a lot of movie scenes cut into it and a lot of interviews with the cast and crew. All of the information is basic, complete with a plot rundown. Everyone’s excited about the film, but that’s what they get paid for.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
You won’t be missing anything if you forget all about this film. It felt like an unfinished product, but didn’t offer enough to make me want to give it another shot. I’d go ahead and wait for the next Mos Def performance before suffering through this one.
