WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
An eccentric billionaire (Richard Attenborough) decides to play God and scientifically clones dinosaurs using pre-historic DNA. Placing them in a high tech theme park on an exotic island, he’s eager to share his achievements with the outside world. When his grandkids, lawyer and consulting scientists (Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum) come for a first look, you guessed it, all hell breaks loose!
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
If you’re a fan of unbelievable special effects and old fashioned adventure stories, this is your movie. The folks over at Industrial Light and Magic (the FX people behind Star Wars) are pioneers in making the impossible happen and deserve all the credit in the world for this great movie. Don’t worry, that’s not a swipe at Steven Spielberg, who’s brilliant direction basically orchestrates all the ensuing mayhem. The dinosaurs are incredibly realistic and seem to assume individual "personalities". Surprisingly, there are no big name actors involved which despite your first instincts, is actually a great thing. Why waste money on Arnie or Sly when the dinosaurs are the real stars? Neill and Dern both contribute solid performances but Goldblum steals the show as the wise guy chaos theorist. The movie’s got plenty of heart stopping moments and even greater chase scenes featuring one bad ass mutha, Mr. T-Rex himself. After countless viewings, Jurassic Park continues to captivate my imagination time and time again. A must see for anyone who hasn’t already had the chance to witness its magic.
THE EXTRAS
Universal made sure to throw in a number of added features. Forget your 10 minute throwaway "Making Of" documentaries . Included is an almost hour long documentary which explains almost every effect sequence in the movie. Featuring interviews with the ILM crew members, you get a real feel for the passion of these special effects wizards and how much fun they had making the movie. Best of all, the documentary is narrated by none other than Darth Vader himself, Mr. James Earl Jones. They’ve included pre-production meeting footage as well as over 70 storyboards, sketches and paintings. Trailers for the movie, its sequel and JURASSIC PARK 3 (Summer 2001) are also thrown in the mix. A nifty dinosaur encyclopedia is included as well as plenty of production notes. The menus feature sounds from the movie and some cool animation. Fans of the movie will definitely appreciate the extras which are all worthwhile supplements.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
They say good things come to those who wait and Jurassic Park seems to fit that bill. The studio took its time to make sure they got it right and they didn’t disappoint. The movie’s audio and video is top notch and the special features are great companions to an already terrific movie. It gets my blessing and is definitely a great addition to anyone’s DVD library.
