WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
When a mob run poker game gets robbed by a couple amateurs, a hitter named Jackie (Pitt) gets called in to handle the situation.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
KILLING THEM SOFTLY is a strange creature. I think Brad Pitt is brilliant, hes one of those guys who plays the hell out of any role and makes you like the film because of it, but this film, was a witch many a critic and average movie goer wanted to burn at the stake. I went into it cool and collected, and though I wouldnt say I hated it, it wasnt without its share of problemspacing, dialogue and story. Is it a total wash? No, but even Brad Pitts stellar presence (the scene with him and one of the punks in the bar was stellar) isnt enough to make this a worthwhile venture.

At the heart of this film we have the mob and their apparent problemsof which there seem to be many. I have no beef with the initial layout; being that Pitt is a mob hitter who solves problems Winston Wolf style when shit hits the fan. I liked the idea behind Ray Liottas character knocking over his own poker gamewhich he comes clean about later down the road and gets a pass cause hes a cool guyonly to have other guys pick up on the idea of staging another similar robbery in hopes that everyone will think Liotta did it again. On paper thats fine, but I cant see the mob being stupid enough to believe hed do that (something even Pitts character and the mob contact joke about). The way it all plays out feels awkward and makes the mob look incompetent and out to get one another. It felt like the last couple seasons of THE SOPRANOS where everyone turned on one another rather than conduct business and make money.

There were many a complaint about how long it takes Pitts character to hit the screen (which is about twenty-five minutes). I had no problem with this whatsoever. I did find the two fools who rob the poker game annoying as hell and not overly bright. But the real disappointment came from James Gandolfinis worn out hitman character. What a depressing mess of a fool he is. And his dialogue is brutal as he goes on and on about his wife, hookers and anything else he can think to complain about. What a wasted character and even bigger waste of time.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY is dark and depressing, but not without its moments. Theres some humor herecynical humor to be sureas well as some solid action scenes. The gritty camera work captures the lull of gloom and doom the film emanates rather well, but the constant presidential prattling and government propaganda feels like its being jammed down our throats and leaves a bitter taste after a while. The plot is play by numbers, but Brad Pitts execution style makes it bearable as does his last scene and final line in the film.
THE EXTRAS
Deleted Scenes: Theres nine minutes worth, but nothing worth watching aside from the two scenes about the doctor. I liked those.

The Making of Killing Them Softly: A short and sweet five minutes of intel about the flick and a couple words from some of the cast, but nothing the trailer doesnt tell you, unless you want to hear the writer/director babble about capitalism.

Previews: Theres a couple trailers that play before the feature as well as a DVD and Digital Copy of the film.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
All in all, its not abysmal but it feels preachy and boring at times combined with annoying stereotypical characters you dont care about and know exactly what will happen to. I dont mind a crime thriller with a dramatic pace, but this really could have been better.

9/10 in my book. Absolutely fucking loved it, yeah it's slow, it's talky but I love these types of cool slow burners with quick bursts of violence.

Classy and Underrated

9/10 on mine too... one of the best movies of the year... very underrated - by the critics and by the fans. And if the question is "Why ?", then the answer is for being brave ( one of the rare ones)... not a mainstream flick, not for The Avengers fans and not for the Taken 2 fans either... The cast give a superb performances, pointing out Pitt and Gandolfini... I'll be waiting for the extended version since it got cut from 120 mins to only 90 mins for its theatrical run and for the Cannes FF.

Superb film

8/10 At times it got a little self-indulgent and reveled in its dialogue, but the fact that it was incredibly-written meant that it didn't take much away from the film for me. It was an odd film, but strikingly-shot, stunningly-written, and worth watching multiple times.

This fuckin movie was retarded. Glad I only wasted a buck and a half. I would have been really pissed had I gone to the theater.
