WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
In the 1950s, talking about sex was the ultimate taboo. That is, until a horny guy with a large penis started getting curious. Witness the story of a man who researched, photographed, and threw sex on our doorstep. This is Alfred Kinsey, and he likes sex. Prudes beware! If the idea of a penis or vagina on screen frightens you, stay away. (I mean, seeing thousands of people killed is fine, but God forbid we should ever see a penis, right?)
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Watching this movie is like having sex with a really hot guy or girl who has no idea what theyíre doing. Thereís all this promise and potential, but the experience is kind of unsatisfying considering ďwhat could have beenĒ. Donít get me wrong, the movie isnít bad, itís just not as good as I wanted it to be. Itís way too clean, way too by-the-numbers, and way too (I hate to say it) boring. I mean, how on earth do you make sex boring? I felt like I was reading an anatomy textbook. Then again, the movie examines sex exactly as Kinsey did, from a scientific stand-point, so that explains a lot. Thatís not to say the film was a total loss entertainment-wise, as there were plenty of memorable and funny scenes. The parts concerning Kinseyís work are intriguing and fairly enjoyable (aside from those damn gall wasps). Itís his life thatís a bore; I didnít care about his problems at home, with his dad, or his issues in the sack. I only cared about his work, not him personally. So I guess if you actually find Kinsey to be an interesting person, you will very likely be pleased with this movie.

The real brilliance of this film is the actors, particularly Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. They do such a wonderful job capturing emotions and bizarre quirks that you canít help but keep your eyes on them. If only the real life counterparts were as interesting we would have a real sleeper hit. Seeing as how many of my issues with the flick seem to be personal peeves, Iím not positive as to how many others will agree with them. With that in mind, you should decide just how interested you are in sex as a science, the actors present, and the man himself, Alfred Kinsey. If you are intrigued by those three things then Iím sure youíll fall in love with KINSEY. Part of me did, but the rest fell asleep.
THE EXTRAS
There are two different editions for this movie. The regular edition only contains the first disc, which includes a commentary, and the Special Edition comes with a second disc. If youíre even considering buying KINSEY, you have to go with the Special Edition. Let me show you why...

DISC 1:

Commentary (with writer/director Bill Condon): An engaging and informative commentary that gives the listener an overall feel of what he was doing during the making of the film. Check it out.

DISC 2:

The Kinsey Report: Sex on Film (1:23:31): This starts off as your basic, boring ďmaking-ofĒ featurette, consisting of plenty of interviews and film clips. If you wait it out thought, there is some interesting information and entertaining discussions, not to mention plenty of cool behind-the-scenes footage. Overall, itís a very lengthy and in-depth watch for fans.

Deleted Scenes (24:44 Ė with optional commentary by Condon): We get 18 of them. Many of these are very entertaining, and as the director states, were cut for the length and flow of the movie. I especially enjoyed some of the extra character development presented, as well as the informative commentary.

Gag Reel (2:58): A surprisingly hilarious set of clips. Sex is one subject that is always ripe for joking about, and they prove it here.

Sex Ed. at the Kinsey Institute (6:35): A brief, but informative and interesting glimpse of a sex exhibit. There is some history explained, and also various ideas discussed, but be forewarned that itís visual in places.

Interactive Sex Questionnaire: A very cool addition to the DVD. 45 questions are given for you to answer, and based on your score it analyzes the information. Be honest, because itís pretty cool to see the charts alongside your score.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
KINSEY is a decent movie. Itís not too daring or all that exciting, but it certainly captures many ideas about sex during that time period. I did however greatly appreciate the special features for the Special Edition, which certainly makes this DVD much more purchase worthy. A large number of people out there seem to be fascinated with this portrayal of Kinseyís life, so if his life intrigues you, then this is a movie worth checking out.
