WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Genius hockey player Alex Kovalev and his personal trainer Tom Sheehan want to pump us up and get us fit. Trust me when I say this, they aint playing!
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
For those who donít know, ALEX KOVALEV (also known as Kovy, AK-27 and The Artist.) is a Russian Hockey player, doing his thing within the NHL. I know of him because he was my favorite player when he was part of my home team the Montreal, Canadiens (from 2004 to 2009). Esteemed for his fancy stick handling, flamboyant style on the ice and devastating slap shots, Kovy was worshiped in Montreal; he was the closest thing we got to another Legend at home a la Guy Lafleur. He now sadly plays for the Ottawa Senators, but thatís another story.

In 2008, Kovalev released a two-disc DVD titled My Hockey Tips and Training Methods. I own the DVD and found it to be a very valuable tool in terms of bettering my pathetic street-hockey game. Now in 2009, Kovy is back with another potent DVD entitled: ENTRAINEMENT HORS GLACE (OFF ICE TRAINING). The DVD (which can be watched in English or in French) focuses on Kovyís training regimen when having to prep up for a arduous hockey season. Kovalev and his personal trainer Tom Sheedhan basically give us a badass routine that is comprised of 93 exercises and that will get ya into shape or kill you. Iím talking, upper body, lower body, full body, movement training, push training and training for speed and agility. No stone is left unturned; youíll be a Universal Soldier by the end of itÖ thatís if you manage to do the whole thing on a regular basis.

The DVD itself was slickly produced (loved the graphics indicating the muscle group that the particular excise works out and the rock ditties hit home) and the program itself went above and beyond keeping ya in shape to play hockey, it will get ya in shape PERIOD. You play B Ball, football, rock, paper scissorsÖ this routine will help make ya the best that you can be at it, cause youíll be a lean, mean machine if you pull it off. One thing that I really dug about the program is that it was pretty accessible. You basically need a bench, one of them big blue rubber balls and those rubber tubing/resistance elastic bands that folks use for Pilates. You also need lots of room for some of the elastic-less exercises (i.e. in my case: the vacant parking lot near my broís place).

I only have one complaint about the program, it may be too long. Iíll have to actually DO IT to find out its clock time, but while watching it, I kept thinking: ďThereís no way that Iíll ever find the time to do all this regularlyĒ. Hey maybe Iíll just do the exercises that I feel I need to do the most. In closing, Iíve always been an old school guy when it comes to training: free weights and a boxing bag but Kovy sold me with this DVD, Iíll give them Pilates elastic thingies and his get FIT or die routine a shotÖ will you?
THE EXTRAS
The second DVD had these features to offer:

Kovalev and friends foundation for kids: Kovalev explains why he made the DVD and where the money is going: his foundation to help kids with cardiac defects. It should be said that Kovalev was diagnosed with a heart disorder when he was a kid hence his foundation. A great man!

AK 27 performance bench: Tom Sheehan shows us the special bench he designed for Kovyís training routine and explains to us how it works. Off Ice Hockey Training: Kovy demonstrates a handful of useful exercises that will better your street hockey game and you bet your caboose that I'm gonna start doing them. This was my favorite extra on this disk. NOTE: At a certain point Kory does a unique exercise: dogs chasing the ball while he dekes around them with his stick. That was priceless!

We're also treated to; a Photo Gallery and an online option to get a Customized Training program.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Iím a Kovy fan; I respect him as player and as a human being, so that definitely upped my enjoyment of the DVD. With that said, you donít need to be a Kovy or hockey nut to get something out of this double disk. This work-out is killer; I can definitely see its merits. It may be too long but Iíll give it a shot and really find out if it is - it's worth it. You looking to better your hockey game? Get Kovyís My Hockey Tips and Training Methods DVD. But if you wanna to get in shape? Like REALLY get in shape and you donít want to spend the coin on a gym? This Budís for you!
