WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A young woman and her little brother are plagued by a malevolent being who is only visible in the darkness.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

LIGHTS OUT has a simple premise, but one that makes for some cool visuals and an overall decent scary movie.

Based on his own viral short film, David Sandberg populates his feature debut with plenty of standard frights, from crazy people to creepy mannequins to killer ghosts. The main haunting at the heart of the movie is built up nicely throughout the film, culminating in a rather effective reveal and finale. The filmmaker also makes the smart choice to go full-on practical for the effects, making the lights on-lights off scares as believable as possible. Also appreciated? At barely an hour and twenty minutes, LIGHTS OUT is nice and short, so it doesnít have time to wear out its welcome.

If you were a fan of the creepy original short, you know mostly what to expect here. I think the five minute version was probably more effective, mainly because it doesnít have to pad out the scares with an hour of story. LIGHTS OUT may be better than many of the lazy horror films that get pumped out by Hollywood every year, but itís still pretty predictable and cliche. Teresa Palmer and Maria Bello do what they can in the acting department, but the script is cookie cutter stuff, constantly spoon feeding the audience and over-explaining everything. The main character discovers whatís going on by listening to secret tapes, then has it explained to her again by a character, then in turn gets to tell the superfluous boyfriend character the entire story again. If you can look past all that, thereís still some fun to be had.

THE EXTRAS

For a film that was a surprise success, LIGHTS OUT gets a pretty disappointing Blu Ray treatment. Not even the original short film or a commentary by the first time director.

Deleted Scenes (13:58): There are two brief scenes of little consequence, and then a lengthy alternate ending that seems more like a cheesy sequel than a plausible finale. Iím glad they cut this and ended the movie when they did.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

LIGHTS OUT is a nice little surprise; not a new horror classic by any means, but itís got some definite highlights among the standard scary movie script. A solid debut from director David Sandberg.

Extra Tidbit: Sandberg was truly a newcomer to Hollywood, having never been on an actual film set or worked with a real film crew before.
