Mean Girls 2
WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Jo Mitchell (Meaghan Martin) is a tomboy, who’s bounced around at a lot of high schools. With six months left to her high school career, she just wants to keep her head down and get by the best she can. Alas, she runs afoul of the “Plastics”, a trio of bitchy beauties.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Ah, the direct-to-video sequel. Other than the oddly awesome UNDISPUTED flicks, has there ever been a good one? For some reason, this trend seems to be making a giant comeback, with STREET KINGS 2, and SWAT 2 on the way. But MEAN GIRLS? The original was a perfectly charming flick, with a fun script by Tina Fey, and an appealing performance by a pre-horror show Lindsay Lohan (it’s actually almost a tragic film to watch now).
But why in God’s name is there a MEAN GIRLS 2. The satiric tone of the original film is more or less dropped, with this having all the edge of a Disney Cable movie. Heck, I have expected one of the Jonas Brothers to show up, but I guess the budget was too low. Other than a slumming Tim Meadows (guy’s gotta eat), there’s no connection to the original film. Martin pulls off the Lohan role reasonably well, but the “Plastics”are awful, but then again- how can anyone replace Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert? Hint, if you’re going to try, hire a trio of actresses that don’t look like they just walked off the stage of their high school talent show.
Not much here, except for an anti-bullying message from Martin, a brief featurette on poor Tim Meadows, a making of and a gag reel .
Of course, this was an excruciating film for me to watch, and I can’t imagine how anyone that’s not a tween girl under the age of 14 could possibly enjoy this. There’s really nothing here that makes it an even remotely enjoyable film to watch. Hell, even the DVD cover is boring. I mean- look at it! Surely that tells you everything you need to know about this mess.
