WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
The best friend (Biggs) of a crude playboy (Cook) enlists him to take his ex-girlfriend (Hudson) on a date and disgust her to no end. That should push her right back into his arms, right?
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
No one but Tank Turner can take your girlfriend on a date and offend her in ten different ways in two hours flat. “It’s what I do,” he explains. He’s a professional asshole, hired to scare your cherished one into running right back into your unworthy arms.

He’s played by Dane Cook, who—if you’ve seen his nine-episode HBO miniseries Tourgasm—is a bit of an asshole himself. Tank’s latest assignment is to take out his best friend/roommate Dustin’s (Jason Biggs) ex/co-worker, Alexis (Razzie nominee Kate Hudson), lest Dustin spend every future Saturday night of his life with his crate of porn tapes (for the record, the Lawrence of a Labia gag was used twice this year, the other time being in Zack and Miri Make a Porno).

But then guess what happens. No, guess; we critics can’t just tell you…

That’s right, Tank falls for Alexis and they begin dating, forcing the movie to do a complete 180. What starts out as a vulgar showcase for Cook turns into a formulaic rom-com of Andy Tennant-sized proportions. There’s no middle ground, though that might be what director Howard Deutch was going for: the guys get lowbrow sex jokes and their chicks get Kate Hudson. Tit for tat, as it were.

The director’s name might sound familiar. His first three movies—Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Great Outdoors—were penned by John Hughes when he was still going by his birth name and not “Edmond Dantès.” At this point, you might be wondering, “What happened to Deutch’s career? Why is he directing trash like My Best Friend’s Girl?” The answer is simple: Hughes started directing his own scripts, leaving Deutch to Billy Joel videos and episodes of “Caroline in the City” and the short-lived NBC sitcom “Watching Ellie.”

So here is My Best Friend’s Girl, which takes its title—and bulk of the soundtrack—from the 1978 hit by The Cars (Ed. note: the author rambled for another 300 words on how “bitchin’” The Cars’ debut album was…but we didn’t see how that was relevant, so it has been extracted). For how crude and funny it tries to be, the filmmakers are content with Hudson playing the supporting dimbulb, never giving her anything R-rated (save a 2 Live Crew sing-a-long) or comedic to do. Instead, the gameplay is left to crowd favorite Cook.

For laughs (because ya gotta get ‘em somewhere), I Googled ‘Dane Cook Fan Club’ and clicked the first link. I searched for ‘My Best Friend’s Girl’ and was greeted with this message: ‘No results were found fulfilling your search criteria.’ That says something. Then I searched ‘shit’ and got two results. That says more.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary with Director Howard Deutch: Deutch, in between many moments of simply watching his movie, has nothing interesting to say.

Audio Commentary with Jason Biggs, Writer Jordan Cahan, and Producer Greg Lessans: This is a much more energetic track, with the trio sharing stories, laughs, and drinks for the duration.

Making It In Beantown: Where It All Began (9:22) pays tribute to Boston, noting hometown hero Dane Cook’s popularity, the city’s love of sports, and the locations used in the movie.

The Cast’s Guide to Dating (8:33): Dane Cook, Jason Biggs, Kate Hudson, and some of the supporting cast offer tips on dating…just in case you care. But you don’t, so skip it.

The Prom: A Teen Rite of Passage (4:44): The players from the previous extra gather to reflect on their prom(s)…just in case you care. But again, you don’t, so skip it.

A to Z: Professor Turner’s Sexist Rating System (7:56): Alec Baldwin discusses his character, while other cast members dissect the “alphabet system” of rating women. For example, an “A” is a ‘10,’ an “N” has one boob, and a “P” is a peg leg.

Deleted/Extended Scenes: There are 15 here, most of which feature Kate Hudson and none of which are worth watching.

Previews.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
A worthless movie on worthless DVD with worthless features. Cook fans might gather to hear their favorite comic say words like "blowjob" and "cunt," but doesn't he have a new CD out for that sort of stuff?
