WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
By day, nurse Abby Russell (Paz de la Huerta) rules the roost at All Saints Memorial Hospital, but by night, she prowls nightclubs on the hunt for cheating husbands, who she dispatches gruesomely. She also becomes fixated on a young, innocent new nurse – Danni (Katrina Bowden) who makes the mistake of rejecting her advances.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
NURSE 3D always seemed like a poster in search of a movie. That iconic image of a nude Paz de la Huerta (wearing only a nurse's cap) and covered in blood set many of horror aficionados hearts aflutter, but in our modern, knowingly cynical era of horror fare, could NURSE 3D ever be more than a joke? Obviously, the answer is no, but in the end it doesn't really matter. This is what I'd call a “good” bad movie, in that the goal here was to make something campy, and if you walk into a movie called NURSE 3D expecting anything more than a lark the joke's on you.

Director Doug Aarniokoski seems to be having a blast, lovingly shooting star Paz de la Huerta in various stages of undress as she stalks the city, looking for men to seduce and devour, like a black widow spider. With dozens of gooey, gruesome murders cheekily shot in 3D, this is the kind of movie that works best if it's watched with friends – and preferably high.

Paz de la Huerta is certainly an interesting specimen. I can't say she's “good” in NURSE 3D, as it's a ridiculous performance, and often inept. However, she's never anything less than entertaining, looks great and is probably giving the exact kind of performance a movie like this requires. Next to her, co-star Katrina Bowden is a model of restraint. Despite her supermodel-level good looks, Bowden plays this relatively straight and sweet as the object of Abby's affections. The only downside is that while de la Huerta is more often nude than not, Bowden mostly keeps hers on (although her incredible backside virtually has a co-starring part).

Running a tight eighty-three minutes, NURSE 3D never wears out its welcome and ends just around the time the joke starts to wear thin. In the end, NURSE 3D is exactly the movie I'm sure everyone involved set out to make, which is like an eighties slasher film crossed with a Russ Meyer movie, right down to the highly sexualized, ultra-tight nurse uniforms . It's goofy, gory, and very titillating in a twisted but mostly fun way. For genre fans it's definitely worth checking out.

THE EXTRAS

Director's Commentary: Director Doug Aarniokoski contributes a lively, fun commentary where he spends most of his time breaking down the film's visual style, which seems highly influenced by early Brian de Palma.

Bad Medicine: The Making of NURSE Featurette This is your standard studio epk, running eight-minutes and mostly devoted to interviews with the cast. Bowden is endearing with her comment that the film is “artistically” shot. De la Huerta is also interviewed, and seems just as off-the-wall offscreen as she is on, although I assume her personality here is a bit of a put-on.

Video Diaries: This is just a quick edit of some cute video diaries shot by Bowden and co-star Corbin Bleu on location in Toronto. There's not much here, other than a goofy prank by Bleu involving a toonie, and Bowden making cookies for the crew. Meh.

NURSE 3D is available here in both 3D and 2D. If you're like me, and don't have a 3D player it automatically defaults to 2D. There's also the requisite digital copy.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS
The only problem with NURSE 3D on Blu-ray is that watching it at home is not the ideal way to see it. It's really a midnight movie, and those really need to be seen with the right audience in a packed theatre. This is the kind of movie that would have KILLED the crowd at the Fantasia. Even outside of that context, it's a fun movie.

Wasn't a fan. Director Doug Aarniokoski stated that he wanted to do “a female version of American Psycho” but it's pretty far from there. Some times we're supposed to root for Abby as she goes on her blood-soaked rampage, other times we're supposed to fear her...not a Paz de la Huerta fan and the whole thing was such a turn-off. Katrina Bowden makes a decent scream queen though.

Lol. It's not AT ALL a female AMERICAN PSYCHO. If that was the goal they missed it pretty badly. de la Huera is an odd one, that's for sure. Bowden really does make a good scream queen.
