Don’t bother trying to answer that. You won’t care what happens in this movie anyways.
First off, for a movie about Thai hookers and drug deals gone sour, ONE TAKE ONLY sure is boring. There are so many random scenes and character daydreams that are of little or no consequence to the actual story, that it quickly becomes tedious waiting to see if anything relevant is going to happen. The plot that’s described above doesn’t even start until an hour in and lasts all of 15 minutes. Yet director Pang felt the need for a ten minute “subplot” that follows a random call girl through her first night on the job. Does it have a point? Not really. Is it at least interesting? Sadly no.
What little story there is still feels convoluted and ultimately meaningless. There’s no smooth transition from ONE TAKE ONLY’s attempt to be a gritty crime drama to its laughable romance (upbeat pop music included). The two lead actors have little chemistry together and they come off looking just as bored as the audience. Most of the time I can read through the BS and at least tell what a filmmaker was trying to do/say, but here I have no freaking clue what Oxide Pang wanted to accomplish.
Making of Oxide Pang’s AB-NORMAL BEAUTY (10:54): This is the first time I’ve seen a behind-the-scenes segment for a completely different movie! I guess they expected the audience to be like, “Oh, Asian people! It must be the same film I just watched.”
A Theatrical Trailer and Previews for other, much better Asian movies from Tartan Video.
Extra Tidbit: The girl who plays Som looks like an Asian Phoebe Cates. And there was much rejoicing.
