WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Two decades before the events of the first two films, young sisters Katie and Kristi must deal with a demon spirit thatís plaguing their family.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Hate to admit it, but Iíve never seen a PARANORMAL ACTIVITY movie before this one. Found footage films just arenít my cup of tea. (At least the ones Iíve seen so far. Read my APOLLO 18 review here.) While the third film in this recent horror series isnít a classic of the genre by any means, itís not completely worthless either.

A prequel set in 1988, PARANORMAL 3 gives a bit of backstory that sheds some light on of Katieís past with her family and the previous hauntings that were mentioned in the first two films. Some of it is a bit suspect (the VHS cameras shoot in amazing hi-def quality!), but overall itís a decent set up for some scares. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmakers behind the great ďdocumentaryĒ CATFISH, take the helm here and play with some of the standard horror tropes despite the format, including the clichť sex scene, clueless babysitter, and people doing stupid things. The visual effects are fairly seamless and the performances were convincing enough, especially with the young cast. Thereís plenty of jump scares and shock moments, but every now and again the film cultivates a feeling of uneasiness, mostly thanks again to the involvement of the children. Anytime you see a little girl playing ďtrustĒ on a second story railing with an invisible spirit itís probably going to creep you out.

The main thing that drags PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 down is the same issue I have with found footage movies in general: itís too slow. With the home filming (which itself feels forced to begin with) thereís no real sense of pacing and you spend an inordinate amount of time waiting for something to happen. Things predictably pick up during the last 10 minutes as it moves toward its stock shock ending, but thereís a lot of tedious, repetitive scenes getting there.
THE EXTRAS
Both the Theatrical and Unrated cut of the film is included here. The extended version adds an extra 10 minutes of footage.

Lost Tapes (3:11): This consists of a ďscare montageĒ where Dennis tries to scare and prank Julie in the house, as well as a cheesy commercial for Dennisí production company. If youíre looking for deleted scenes from the movie, youíll be disappointed.

You also get copies of the movie on DVD and UltraViolet.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
You could do worse than PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3, but itís not the constant scarefest the previews suggest.

Extra Tidbit: Katie Featherston. Yowza.
