This is what we've grown to expect from Seagal. He's become a walking punch-line. And for me personally, with the exception of the admittedly fun UNDER SIEGE, that's all he's ever been. His latest DTV flick, PISTOL WHIPPED, is the first thing I've seen from him in the past ten years that didn't make me wanna overdose on sleeping pills. There actually appears to be some attempt, however half-hearted, to make a somewhat decent action film, which in itself is more praise than I've ever been able to utter regarding Seagal's recent line of work.
Seagal plays Matt, possibly the most f*cked up character Seagal has ever played. They really went all out on making this guy the "troubled hero." Let me summarize: he's a washed-up ex-cop whose wife left him for being a drunk, is a lousy father, suffers from a gambling problem which has put him millions in debt with the wrong people, and has been called upon to assassinate some nasty criminals. I hate to keep referencing back to previous Seagal movies, but seriously, that's like five of his film's worth of character development right there. That's not to say it's all good character development though; a lot of it comes across as hamfisted and laughably cliché. Still, it's nice that they at least put some effort into the script. And the same can be said for the action; finally, a Seagal movie where the person doing the bulk of the stunts is actually Seagal. That alone should be enough to keep his fans satisfied.
