WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Connor4Real (Andy Samberg) was the lead singer of a successful boy band, The Style Boyz. But when Connor's increasing popularity starts getting to his head, he leaves the band to embark on his own solo career. A poorly-received album and tour threaten Connor's celebrity status, which causes him to reevaluate his position in the business.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
A mixture of THIS IS SPINAL TAP and VH1's Behind the Music, The Lonely Island's mockumentary, POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING, is better than you may think. On first glance, the film could be seen as a shot at Justin Bieber, especially his big screen music documentary JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER. But it is so much more than that. From excesses in wealth and ego to ridiculous endorsements, horrible songs, and a plethora of yes-men groupies, the film never stops never stopping as a hilarious critique of celebrity culture and the music industry as a whole. And I can't leave out the on-the-nose depiction of TMZ (CMZ), with Will Arnett as a Harvey Levin-esque character.

Many of the biggest names in the entertainment industry also saw the humor in the film, with Justin Timberlake (in a cameo role) and Adam Levine, Paul McCartney, Pharrell, Questlove, and many more signing up to talk about Connor in the interview portion of the film. Other supporting cast range from The Lonely Island's friends from SNL, Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader, and Tim Meadows, as well as Joan Cusack as Connor's mother and Sarah Silverman as his publicist. Take a peek at the deleted scenes in the special features to see even more scene-stealing moments from Cusack.

Although the movie does have some ridiculous elements, including a wolf attack during Connor's engagement, POPSTAR's insanity never crossed the line too far that it took me out of the movie. I'm not sure if that says more about me or the state of the entertainment industry, but the headlines surrounding Connor4Real didn't seem too far off from what we constantly see on tabloid magazines. It's not easy to make a smart, funny comedy that appeals to so many people but The Lonely Island have a hit on their hands with POPSTAR and a few catchy songs to boot.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentary: Writer/Directors Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, and star/co-writer Andy Samberg give interesting, hilarious insight into the filming of the movie, as well as make fun of the commentary process in general.

Deleted Scenes: Almost 45 minutes of deleted scenes. My favorites were anything that gave me more Joan Cusack! Concert Opening; Meet Tilly Harry Backstory; Rehearsals; Aquaspin Blender; Meet the Crew; "The World is Dope"; Eddie's Idea; Album Release Party; Video Chat with Ashley; Zippy Wedding Invitations + Paula/Conner Talk About Engagement; Tilly Arrives on Tour; Lawrence's Visit- Alt Version; 2nd Huddle; Bee Attack #2; Eat Soup; Cube Theorem; Aquaspin Firing; Downward Spiral; Quinceañera; Sponge, Eddie & Bagpiper; Sponge, Eddie & Bagpiper Alt Ending; Paula and Conner Kiss; and Bee Attack #3

Music Videos: A collection of Connor4Real music videos from the film. "I'm a Weirdo"; "Equal Rights"; "Mona Lisa"; "Finest Girl" ("Bin Laden Song); "F*** Off"; and "Legalize It".

CMZ Outtakes: 5 minutes of additional footage from the TMZ-esque CMZ show. Who knew Martin Sheen was so protective of his hummus (or as he says, hahmus). Martin Sheen vs Conner4Real; Anne Frank; Orgy Aftermath #1; None of Your Business; Orgy Aftermath #2

Gag Reel: I wish this feature were longer than 3.5 minutes, because it really is funny to see the actors crack up after Connor's more ridiculous lines.

Interview Outtakes: More interview footage from celebrities, including Ringo Starr talking smack about Paul McCartney and Bill Hader playing the SEINFELD theme.

Bonus Footage: Additional short footage from the characters that weren't long enough to make it as an official deleted scene.

How To Donkey Roll: Remember Darren's Dance Grooves? Well this is the Style Boyz version, teaching fans how to do the Donkey Roll dance.

Big Boy Freestyle: Another deleted scene of Connor "freestyle" rapping...or reading a rap off of a sheet of paper.

Frog Jizz: A deleted scene about frog semen... yeah...

Shooting Hoops: A longer version of the basketball scene from the movie. Basically Connor continuously says "LeBron" and then misses his shots.

"Turn Up The Beef" Backstory: Celebrity interviews talking about the FRIENDS theme song. (It makes more sense when you watch the extra)

Sex Tape: A deleted scene of Connor's "sex" tape.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
The film is able to pack a lot of humorous punches in its 87 minute run time. Samberg and co. leave audiences on a high note by ensuring the film, and Connor4Real, never overstays its welcome. This attention to concision is probably one of the reasons the Blu-Ray is so rich with special features. Fans of the film will enjoy the extra hours of content; I know I did!

Funniest movie since What We Do In the Shadows, in my opinion. The first audio commentary I ever watched on a DVD was the one on Hot Rod back when I was in high school, and even then loved it, so I'll definitely pick this one up.

Haven't laughed that hard since Anchorman..

Very spot on review, but I would go higher with the rating. The writing and the songs are so hilariously clever and satirical, they give South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut a run for its money. I was expecting this to be a huge hit for Lonely Island. It did mediocre and, for the life of me, I don't know why. Saw it in the theaters, downloaded a couple songs to play around the water cooler at work, and bought the Blu-Ray which we've seen twice now. This movie just doesn't get old. Five stars
