WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
One night on New Yearís Eve, a rogue wave (which is apparently common) turns the large ship of Poseidon and its passengers upside down. A small band of survivors led by the badass Kurt Russell spend the night trying to get to the surface. Theyíll have to face their fears of fire, water, steel, and drowning to make it through. The result is an intense remake of a campy 70ís disaster classic.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I rather enjoyed myself and was entertained from start to finish with this taught yet unnecessary remake. WHY - Yes, I was entertained but for the record, we didnít need this remake and No, it isnít as good as the original. What separates the original from the new version is the new one sheds the campy storylines and characters and just propels you on a nonstop intense hold-your-breath thrill ride, hardly ever stopping for a breather. I have to say, when I saw it in the theater, I was on the edge of my seat for most of the film. Itís all very visceral. People get impaled, burned, drowned, etc and itís all intense. One scene involves our band crawling in a small air vent thatís quickly filling up with water and thereís no way out. Good stuff.

At the same time, the film is short (which is good) and afterward, you sort of just forget about the movie. Another problem is that there is zero character development, nor really big stars which may or not be fine for this film. The special effects are very impressive as is the set design and the intricate action sequences. Itís a good mindless Saturday night action film that certainly will keep you glued to the tube. POSEIDON is a quick in-and-out film that I imagine will do pretty well on DVD. One last thing, I will say that a lot of the shock and awe is lost in the translation from the big to the small screen.
THE EXTRAS
Disc 1

Poseidon: A Ship on a Soundstage >> 23 min > This isnít a bad ice breaker showing the vast amount of practical and special effects work that I honestly didnít pay attention to, which is an effects manís dream. You see shots that you might not have known only existed in a computer and youíll see giant ship sets. Thereís also some fun comments from the cast and crew.

Theatrical Trailer

Disc 2

Poseidon: Upside Down >> 11 min > This is more on set footage of the amazing upside down ship set. More interviews and my favorite is Richard Dreyfuss saying ďballs outĒ. Sweet.

A Shipmateís Diary >> 13 min > This is a really lame something or other consisting of two second blurbs by people I donít know or care about. Things do get better as you see more behind the scenes stuff.

Rogue Waves >> 29 min > You can always count on the History Channel for good programming and they are on display here with a look at POSEIDONís rogue waves. Great stuff.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
As Richard Dreyfuss so delicately put it, POSEIDON is ďballs out!Ē Itís fun, intense, and anything but boring. At the same token, thereís little substance and itís a remake of an okay 70ís camp film. If youíre in the mood for some good Ďol Russell and friends in a huge special effects menagerie called POSEIDON. The DVD is rather good but the limited special features may not be worth the extra buck.

Bottom Line: A GOOD RENTAL
