WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A rebellious young man (Robert Pattinson) falls in love with a young woman (Emilie de Ravin) with an over-protective father (Chris Cooper), and a tragic past. Meanwhile, he also has to contend with his own emotionally distant father (Pierce Brosnan).
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
God, how I loathed REMEMBER ME when I saw it in theaters earlier this year. In particular, I hated the shameless, manipulative ending- which basically uses 9/11 as a plot device to shame the audience into feeling some kind of emotional reaction to a film that- up to that point, had been about as emotionally involving as a bad episode of “General Hospital”.
Quite obviously, this is Robert Pattinson’s effort to break away from the TWILLIGHT franchise, and establish himself as a leading man. To this extent, he spends the two hour running time of REMEMBER ME doing a bad James Dean impression. Alas, EAST OF EDEN, or REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE this is not- and some of the efforts to toughen Pattinson up- such as having him get into a street fight, or GASP- smoke indoors, are hilarious. Pattinson hasn’t got even the slightest edge, so his faux-tough guy posturing is only good to give the film a few unintentional laughs.
That’s probably the only worthwhile thing about the film- that it’s unintentionally funny. In particular, there’s a scene where Pattinson terrorizes a classroom full of eleven year old girls (seriously) that’s so hilariously bad it’ll likely end up as a youtube sensation.
That said, the ending is so ridiculously offensive that any good will it might have earned by offering some cheesy, WICKER MAN remake style laughs, pretty much evaporated. I HATED this ending, and I wanted to storm out of the theater after seeing it. It caught me off-guard, and I’m shocked by how crass, and despicably manipulative this ending is. For me, this film is bad enough that everyone involved, particularly Pattinson, and director Allen Coulter, should be put in “movie jail” for a while. Alas, something tells me this isn’t the last we’ve heard of R-Patt.

We get two commentary tracks by director Allen Coulter and star Robert Pattinson- that I must admit to skipping as I didn't want to hear either justify the atrocious ending. We also get a quick Making of . Mercifully, the extras end there...
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
This is a horrible film, and I doubt even the most hard-core TWILLIGHT fan will be able to get past the ending. The only thing that makes this disc worthwhile is a hilarious quote from a critic (who shall remain nameless because I’m a nice guy) on the back that says this is “so perfectly acted and directed that it will become a part of you”. Ummm, yeah- sure it will.
