WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Upon hearing that her daughter is suffering from a mental break, Ricki, and aged rocker who gave up everything for a (missed) shot at stardom, heads home to try and rekindle with her family.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
I can’t stand Diablo Cody. JUNO was abundantly overrated, and JENNIFER’S BODY was just terrible. Everything since then has continued on a downward spiral, and now we have this…RICKI AND THE FLASH (damn you for using The Flash’s name in vein), a truly awful flick about a mother who abandoned her kids to pursue a career in rock and roll, which essentially ends up being a shitty cover band that plays in slum bars. To be clear though, she’s a grocery store cashier by day, and pathetic attempt at a rock star by night. Either way you slice it, it makes for bad storytelling.

What really grates on my nerves is how similar this is to so many other projects out there, ones that were done better. The Denis Leary led, SEX&DRUGS&ROCK&ROLL is similar, in that it’s about a burned out rocker who wants to reconnect with his kid. It’s not great by any means, but at least it’s funny and you don’t hate Leary’s character. This flick tries to go that route—wanting you to like Ricki, but there’s no way in hell that’s going to happen—and fails miserably. Add to that, her kids don’t even want to give her a second chance, and to be honest, I don’t blame them. Getting abandoned at a young age isn’t something children tend to forget, let alone forgive.

RICKI AND THE FLASH is an odd vehicle for Meryl Streep (Ricki), and no matter how much you love Streep as an actress, you’ll be hard pressed to root for her or enjoy her at all. Yes, it’s that bad. Nothing here works, and it’s a real chore to get through—even with an open mind. There are just some movies you walk away from scratching your head. This is one of them. And if that’s not bad enough, Cody’s next project is a live action BARBIE movie. Yes, we have THAT to look forward to.
THE EXTRAS
Deleted Scenes: Eight minutes of PASS. Seriously though, these four scenes do nothing to eject the sour taste from my mouth.

Getting Ready for Ricki: The Making of RICKI AND THE FLASH: Cast and crew go on about the movie’s themes (yeah, cause they’re so awesome), as well as a bit of babbling about music and what not.

Rediscovering Rick Springfield: Rick Springfield was a part of this movie, though if I were him, I wouldn’t be sharing that info with anyone.

Previews: There are some trailers, as well as a Photo Gallery you won’t look at.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Streep is hardly in demand these days, but seeing as how she’s such a decorated and accomplished actress, well, I’m not ashamed to admit I was expecting more. Time to fire up THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and purge this flick from my memory.
