WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Future brothers-in-law Ben and James travel to Miami to stop a wealthy crime boss from smuggling drugs, guns and pygmy giraffes in to the country.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?

I did not see the first RIDE ALONG, but I feel confident that I was able to grasp the subtle nuances of the plot enough to understand what's going on in the sequel. Kevin Hart is short. Ice Cube is grumpy. Ice Cube does not like that the miniscule Kevin Hart is marrying his sister. Does that cover it?

RIDE ALONG 2 is a harmless enough film with a few laughs, but it feels predictable and underwhelming. Cube and Hart are entertaining performers and have chemistry together, but the material given to them is stale at best. As expected, most of the humor revolves around Hart being humiliated as a tiny and weak man. In 90 minutes, he gets punched in the nuts by children, forced to eat trash nachos, and fights an alligator that's larger than him. And those are just the highlights! As his partner and would-be torturer, Ice Cube doesn't have much to do in the movie aside from scowl, lacking any of the angry charm that was such a joy in the 21 JUMP STREET movies. It's especially missed in his unecessary romantic subplot with Olivia Munn.

You may or may not be surprised to see FANTASTIC FOUR and TAXI director Tim Story's name at the top of the credits. It makes sense given how safe and by-the-numbers RIDE ALONG 2 plays in terms of action and comedy. The few attempts at thinking outside the box, such as a car chase where Kevin Hart pictures himself playing Grand Theft Auto causing the action to turn in to an actual video game, just don't work. They even manage to squander a cameo by FAST AND FURIOUS star Tyrese in a scene involving illegal street racing. How does that even happen?

THE EXTRAS

The disc boasts a ton of special features, but it's definitely quantity over quality.

Commentary by director Tim Story: Story discusses the expected—anecdotes about the cast, interesting tidbits about the locations, etc. However, neither the information or this movie is interesting enough to recommend sitting through it a second time.

The Ride Along Round Table (15:52): A lively, rambling discussion between Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Tim Story and producer Will Packer that ranges from off topic jabs about each other's work to reminiscing about their time filming. This is actually funnier than the movie itself.

Deleted Scenes (8:45): Six brief and unnecessary additions, including more from the club scene and more between Kevin Hart and his wife.

The Ride Diaries (20:35): A collection of seven short featurettes chronicling specific days of filming. These include the alligator scene, the bachelor party scene, the opening scene with Tyrese, the wedding and more. It's nice having these span pretty much the entire production, but each one is too short to be substantial.

Ride Along With Us (1:48): A fake commercial for the Atlanta Police featuring Hart and Cube trying to recruit new officers.

Behind the Scenes of "Ride Along With Us" (1:24): No joke—this is a Making Of featurette about the previous special feature. Now we're showing how they make bonus material?

Gag Reel (3:47): A few minutes of standard bloopers—flubbed lines, actors breaking character—you know the drill.

Kevin & Cube: Brothers-in-Law (6:52): Here's your requisite PR Making Of piece with cast and crew talking about how much fun they had and generally just trying to sell you on the movie you just watched.

Inside Black Hammer Vision (3:24): A look at how they created the film's GTA-inspired video game sequence.

The New Recruits (6:21): A look at the new actors joining the sequel—Ken Jeong, Olivia Munn and Benjamin Bratt—and what they each bring to the table.

Ride Along with Kevin Hart (5:26): A collection of Kevin Hart being funny on the set. (Funnier than he is in the actual movie.)

Cori's Wedding Commercial (1:36): A fake commercial for Sherri Shepherd's wedding coordinator. Nobody wanted this.

The Blu Ray also comes with a DVD and Digital Copy.

FINAL DIAGNOSIS

You should know exactly what you're getting with RIDE ALONG 2 (formulaic comedy and action) and it doesn't do anything to exceed those expectations. If you're a big fan of Kevin Hart and/or Ice Cube it may be worth a rental or TV viewing. Otherwise, feel free to skip.

Extra Tidbit: RIDE ALONG 2 was the first film to dethrone STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS from the top of the box office.
