WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After a vampire clan claims a reporter (Liu), she seeks revenge and blood with the help of a detective (Chiklis) who also has a connection to the bloodsuckers.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
If it walks like a zombie and talks like a zombie, it must bea vampire? Rise: Blood Hunter (written and directed by Snakes on a Plane scribe Sebastian Gutierrez) slumps about more like the Romero undeads than it does leap and pounce like the Blade trilogy bloodsuckers weve grown accustom to in the 21st century.

What analysis can be offered other than simply stating Rise is a bad movie? Its not the laugh-along bad as with Snakes, though. No, Gutierrez has taken a risk by not letting the audience in on the fun of his serious vampire movie, one so buckled to avoid energy, the pinnacle comes not in the action (or lack thereof), but the cameos. The great Robert Forster turns up for the first scene, while shock-rocker Marilyn Manson juices up his role as a bartender. And whats a vampire flick without Nick Lachey, anyhow?

Here is a movie with roadkill dialogue and a star-killing performance (as Sadie the Vampire Slayer) by that horrible lead actress Lucy Liuget your Razzie predictions in! And then theres the subplot with Detective Rawlins (Chiklis, better off as Vic Mackey), whose daughter was killed by the same brood who claimed Sadieof course. Everything under the moon is used that youd expect to be in such a feature, right down to the bellowing floorboards.

Therere buckets of human blood and a few chomps through flesh, which is likely to get a rise out of vampire flick nuts. And thats about all that can be said for Rise, which is presented on DVD in its extended form. Whats different from this cut to the print American missed the weekend it ran? It runs nearly a half-hour longer than the theatrical release, but I still wouldnt know. Its my job to research this information, sure, but its also the filmmakers duty to help us believe whats onscreen and make the viewing livelier than a, well, viewing.

Rise: Blood Hunter has accumulated less than ten reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. So in a way, Im honored to have been assigned itin the same way the gray bat is honored to be on the endangered species list.
THE EXTRAS
Behind the Scenes Featurettes
Blood (1:54): Ever wonder how to remove fake blood? Shaving cream, naturally.
Sex and Murder (1:43) briefly explores the sexuality underneath all vampire flicks.
Location, Location(2:06) is for the scouting and production design.
Stunts (1:53) covers the stuntmen for Rise and their difficult job.

Storyboard to Screen Featurettes (18:08): While the scenes from the movie play on one side of the screen, the production storyboards show how close the finished product was to the directors initial vision. Always a solid addition to any disc and might be useful to aspiring filmmakers.

The Theatrical Trailer and Previews round out the disc.
