WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
After the brutal murder of a young coed, a group of teenagers begins to worry that they might be the next targets of a potential serial killer. In their fleeting attempts to stay alive, wildly unpredictable hilarity ensues.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
In a nutshell, this was one freaking funny movie. Be forewarned though, if raunchy grossout humor offends you, do yourself a favor and avoid this one altogether. I frequently found myself clutching my sides during many of the over the top sexually themed gags, some of which were just plain nasty. Case in point, the unannounced appearance of a dangling set of gonads and premeditated use of a penis as a murder weapon. How they managed to avoid an NC-17 rating is beyond me. In all fairness, the filmís real strength is in its below the belt shots at movies like SCREAM and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, scoring big points for ripping on many of the genreís stereotypes. They poke fun at everything from the disposable supporting characters to overdrawn murder sequences. It also features plenty of brief but funny visual gags, many of which I caught only after a second viewing. Marlon Wayans was solid as the braindead stoner and his brother Shawn was even better as the football jock whoís a little bit "confused" in the sexuality department. Simply put, if youíre looking for a movie with plenty of outrageous laughs, look no further. Scary Movie will satisfy all of your comedic needs.
I can tell you one thing thatís completely unfunny about this DVD and that's the fact that itís seriously lacking in terms of extras and added bonuses. They did manage to include 5 deleted scenes, some of which I found somewhat amusing. "Hop-A-Long Shorty" in particular, showcases a wild cowboy flavored sex scene. An 8-minute behind the scenes look came across as being an Access Hollywood segment rather than a DVD supplement. It was way too brief and barely scratched the surface on what went into making the movie. The theatrical trailer is also included. Menus are partially animated (a pseudo film projection reel) and feature some sound but nothing that really tickled my fancy.
This is easily one of the funniest movies of the year but I canít understand how they managed to put out such a disappointing disc. With mediocre audio and video as well as some barely qualifiable extras, Scary Movie got an unbelievably crappy DVD transfer. Where were the outtakes and commentary tracks? Iíll cautiously recommend it as rental, only because the movie was flat out hilarious and very entertaining.
