WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
This classic animated TV-show featured a teenage foursome of mystery solving sleuths and their talking mutt as they stumbled their way into all kinds of spooky and silly scenarios. Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, Fred and their cowardly dog Scooby-Doo are the crime-fighters in question and their meddling ways and popular TV show would later spawn an abomination of a movie remake.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
When JoBlo first told me Iíd be reviewing a TV show starring a big, dumb brown dog that likes to snack on things, I was under the impression my assignment would be season one of THE ANNA NICOLE SMITH SHOW. But alas, I found myself revisiting a childhood favorite that hasnít aged as well as I had hoped. Sure, Iíd still like to shag Daphne, hang with Shaggy and try and figure out exactly how old these dudes really are (Iím convinced Fred is at least 37), but the actual show itself isnít so much interesting, as it is nostalgic. Itíll bring a smile to your face more from the memories it evokes from your childhood rather than from the actual content of the show. And yet, Iíd be lying if I said there still arenít a handful of goofy and silly occasions thatíll surely squeeze a chuckle or two out of you. I did get a big kick out of constantly hearing them say words like ďgroovyĒ, ďswellĒ and ďgang.Ē It felt like I was going through one of my old Archie comics again.

I was a little disappointed by an element of the show that Iíd forgotten existed, which is the laugh track. Itís easily the most unnatural thing Iíve ever heard on an animated cartoon. I mean, I can see how it didnít bother me much as a simple-minded infant, but watching this again as a simple-minded adult and hearing the canned laughter in the background; I donít know, it just seemed so manipulative and unnecessary. There is obviously no studio audience, so what is the purpose exactly? I suppose itís to let the kiddies in on what is and what isnít supposed to be funny. That just doesnít seem right to me. I guess thatís why I always preferred ďdramaticĒ cartoons like DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and G.I. JOE. SCOOBY-DOO will be more enjoyable if youíre planning on watching it with some buddies so you can goof around and take some guesses at the many unanswered questions this show brings up. From whether or not Velma was a lesbian, Shaggyís possible marijuana use or Fredís past criminal record (my own theory)...itís all there for you to enjoy, all over again.
THE EXTRAS
This is a four-disc set. The extra features are spread throughout discs 2, 3 and 4.

Scooby-Dooís Ultimate Fans : This feature takes you to the homes of some seriously obsessed Scooby-Doo superfans. Itís pretty interesting to see all the different kinds of memorabilia that exists based on this show and these dudes have them all! A harmless little feature.

Get the Picture: How to Draw Scooby-Doo and the Gang : This is a very short feature that shows an artist drawing Scooby and the gang (the shot is sped up). Doesnít so much teach you as show you how they are drawn. Meh.

Funky Fashion : A woman makes some voice-over comments on the fashion sense of the Mystery Inc. gang. This is light little piece aimed to show the different personalities of the gang.

America Loves Scooby-Doo Music Video : This song sucks.

Scooby-Doo Street Smarts: Favorite Cases of Scooby-Doo Fans : People on the streets are stopped and asked to comment on what they loved about the show. A very short and uninteresting extra.

Family Favorites : Some Scooby-Doo, Flintstones and Looney Tunes trailers.

Take the Scooby-Doo challenge : 4 multiple choice questions. They went all out on this one, eh? I got one right.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If youíre thinking about buying this for yourself, in hopes of possibly turning back the clock to see if it can deliver the same joy and excitement it did from back when you were a kid, then donít, because it most likely wonít. I would recommend a purchase if you have kids though; itís still a rather cute and sweet (besides the brainwashing laugh-track) little cartoon, thatíll have your tots smiling just as you did back in the day. Theyíre sure to start singing the brilliant theme song all of the time as well.
