WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
A seemingly happy couple have everything going for them until a tragic event shatters their lives. Soon the husband discovers his wifeís infidelity and their life together will never be the same again.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Iíll start off by giving some credit to the cast for doing a fine job with their performances. Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson are always great. Iím not sure whatís going on with Rupert Everett, he looked like he was wearing enough make-up to put most clowns to shame. I should also say that everyone involved did a fine job making the movie. I have no complaints on how they made the film, all my complaints come with the actual movie.

First, the story falls flat. I found it hard to watch a man put up with so much crap from his wife. For 86 minutes, he stood by while his wife cheated on him repeatedly and lied to him. The entire film I was hoping he was finally going to kick his wife out of the house, move in with his secretary and buy a sports car, but he never did. He had this undying love for her, but since the movie never took the time to build that up, we have no reason to like her. We as an audience had no cause to root for them to make it. If anything, we had plenty of reason to root against them. In the history of film, Iíve never seen a man as week as the main character of SEPARATE LIES. There was even a scene where is wife and lover asked him to leave so they could have sexÖand he did.

Although thatís a problem, itís not the only one. The characters are shallow, deceitful people that deserve worse than what they got. It was also one of the most anti-climatic movies Iíve seen in recent memory. It went nowhere. Youíll probably find yourself waiting for an UNFAITHFUL type ending, but you wonít get it. You wonít even come close. Iím not spoiling anything for you, because thereís nothing to spoil.

I understand Nigel Fellowes was trying to portray the agony a husband feels when his wife stops loving him. I just donít feel he was successful in telling his story. By the end of the film, I hated the wife and couldnít respect the husband.
THE EXTRAS
Commentary with director Julian Fellowes: Mr. Fellowes is an interesting, knowledgeable movie guy. He will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the filming, writing and making of his movie. I wasnít a fan of the film, and even I found his demeanor to be amusing and moderately interesting.

There is also a Theatrical Trailer.
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
There are many things that bugged me about this film, but the most frustrating thing is that they try to sell this as a ďsexy thrillerĒ. However, it is not sexy or thrilling on any level. So consider yourself forewarned and to ignore any blurb on the front or back cover of the DVD. Leave this one on the shelf.
