WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Lucia (Paz Vega), a waitress, loves Lorenzo (Tristan Ulloa) a writer struggling to find an idea for his new novel, from afar. One day, she approaches him, declaring her love, and to her surprise he immediately reciprocates- even though theyve never met. They immediately embark on a torrid affair.
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
SEX & LUCIA is the type of film which seldom gets made in the States anymore- a film about sex for adults. Maybe due to the antiquated ratings system that threatens to slap any sexy film with an NC-17, producers are shying away from this type of film, leaving it to filmmakers from elsewhere to pick up the slack. SEX & LUCIA is a scorching flick, anchored by a star-making lead performance from Paz Vega, who within a year was making films like SPANGLISH in the States.

One thing SEX & LUCIA is not though is a traditional love story. Coming from Julio Medem (LOVERS OF THE ARTICLE CIRCLE), SEX & LUCIA is a somewhat elliptical tale, as the film jumps back and forth in time to differing stages in Lucia & Lorenzos relationship, with the film actually opening with Lucia learning about Lorenzos apparent suicide. It also focuses on their interaction with several other characters, including a young woman with whom Lorenzo has a brief, anonymous fling in the ocean before hooking up with Lucia. This woman ends up pregnant, and eventually she tracks down Lorenzo who by this point is using his own life as the basic for his new book.

To be sure, SEX & LUCIA is not a film for everyone, and it takes a bit a patience to get through at times. It all gets a tad convoluted towards the end (although it could be said that were actually watching Lorenzos novel play out). I dont think realism was really the point here, as SEX & LUCIA opts for a poetic, dreamlike feel- helped along enormously by a gorgeous score courtesy of Alberto Iglesias, and the gorgeous digital photography. Its also a hell of a role for Vega, who, judging from her work here, is an actress whose talent Hollywood has yet to really appreciate.
THE EXTRAS
Extras are on the lean side, with only a twenty minute featurette being of substance, although we also get Cast Interviews , a photo gallery , soundtrack excepts , and the trailer .
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
The elliptical story-telling makes SEX & LUCIA an acquired taste, but if you like a little sexy house (like THE DREAMERS) than you might want to give SEX & LUCIA a look-see.
