WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Four very different, single & successful New York City women take on the city and its men in an attempt to find sex, happiness and maybe even a relationship or two, if theyre lucky. The subject of sex and all its wonders is tackled regularly in this series, but not without giving a fair amount of time in trying to bring to light what it might take to make a great love affair work as well. Its season 5 and these girls seem to be finally getting the hang of it
IS IT A GOOD MOVIE?
Okay, its confession time. Some time ago, I was that asshole video clerk who ridiculed and humiliated any man or woman who dared decide to rent SEX AND THE CITY from my fair video store. I made the men feel like eunuchs and treated the women no better than your common sluts. Then one day, I decided to bring home disc 1 of season 1 and Ive been a changed man ever since. I soon found myself feverishly going through each season as soon as it came out and I even started admitting proudly to other heterosexual males that I was into the show. Thats correct, no shame whatsoever. And guess what? I actually picked up a nugget or two that might someday help me with a lucky lady. Not too raw a deal fellas, not at all.

Contrary to popular belief, this show is not just about women acting like men and fucking anything that moves. Actually all four ladies are intelligent, successful modern women who have fairly active imaginations and a hunger for some flesh every now and again. That in itself isn't what makes the show exciting or even original, rather its the sharp, thoughtful and (dare I say) witty dialogue, scenarios and characters that make SEX AND THE CITY feel so damn fresh and addictive season to season.

Season 5 consists of only 8 episodes, the lowest of any season so far. The running storylines from the season include Carrie getting a book deal, Miranda dealing with her new tot, Samantha still going back & forth with Richard (the great James Remar) and Charlotte trying to ease her way back into the game following her disastrous first marriage. The inclusion of Ron Livingston as one of Carries possible love interests was a stroke of genius as hes not only a funny, likeable and charming actor, but he was lucky enough to be a part of two of the best comedies from the late nineties: OFFICE SPACE and SWINGERS. My only problem is that this is too short a season. Still, the quality of writing is the same and the funny moments, dramatic touches and clever commentaries on dating and sex remain just as novel as they were back when the show began in 1998.
THE EXTRAS
Audio Commentaries: Episodes 1, 5 and 8 all have a commentary track by writer Michael Patrick King. I actually prefer that it was him and not the sexy foursome commentating because as the writer, he goes through all the different ideas and motivations they (the various writers) have when writing for the characters in the show. As I mentioned before, the show relies mainly on its writing and this is a good opportunity to hear what inspires them to come up with certain plot points and character decisions.

Interactive Trivia Game: A fun little multiple choice game that tests your knowledge from the 8 episodes from season 5. Its criminally easy though.

Behind The Scenes With Costume Designer Patricia Field (approx. 21 min.): Just what the title says. Patty takes you from the As to the Zs of everything you wanted to know about designing for this show. Im a heterosexual who isnt that big into fashion, so this didnt interest me too much but you gals might like it and it might also provide some enjoyment for some men who enjoy the company of other men. Who knows?
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
If they could only figure out a way to combine OZ with SEX AND THE CITY, I could die a happy man. For you killer fans out there, this is still a worthy purchase despite its lack in episodes and features. For you casual fans, the entire season could be watched and enjoyed in a mere 3-4 hours so rent this as soon as it hits the video store shelves. I just hope you dont get a dickhead like me laughing it up when you bring it to the counter. Send your girlfriend to get it boys, its easier that way
