But no one expects great acting in an action film like this. What we do expect is lots of action and a fun, fast storyline. If that’s what you’re looking for, then you shouldn’t be too disappointed with this one. There’s a decent amount of action sequences and the story moves along somewhat nicely. The problem with the film was the complete lack of originality. Did you ever see the film MOST WANTED? Well, this was very much like that early 90’s film with very few improvements or updates.
I also had problems with Michael Pena’s character. He was a complete waste of screen time. His character barely served a supporting role and I got aggravated with the fact that Pena looks like a pansy even when he’s holding a gun. Also, the montage where Wahlberg “trains” him is ridiculous and it serves no purpose.
However, just because it wasn’t original, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable. Despite several slip-ups, Mark Wahlberg was pretty good as the focused and mad ex-Marine. It was nice to see Danny Glover back on the big screen again and he did a fine job as well. The movie could have used more action, especially at times where there was a big fight, or big shoot out. It felt like the big show downs were over before they began.
Deleted Scenes (11:50): There’s a scene that actually show the local cop getting killed and more scenes with Mark Wahlberg being cool. The movie was long as it was, but I did like these scenes. We actually needed more of these scenes to better justify the “training” scenes with Pena.
Making of Shooter (21:49): Stephen Hunter wrote the book that the film is based off of and he offers his insight into the film. The rest of the normal players show up and give their two cents worth. It’s a normal featurette with a lot of still photos and movie scenes.
Independence Hall (7:20): This is an in-depth look at the assassination scene, complete with a military technical advisor to add legitimacy to the scene. It’s a pretty simple scene, so I didn’t find it too interesting, but if you’re a Philidelphian, you’ll probably enjoy this.
