The stripper-cum-dancer attracts the attention of Stardust Casino entertainment scout Zack Carey (David Lynch favorite Kyle MacLachlan) with an orgasmic $500 lap dance that’s enough to cast her in the show “Goddess.” Like most of the film, it’s downright sleazy-sexy and drips with unexpected comedy.
Gina Gershon is perfect as Zack’s girlfriend/“Goddess” headliner/thorny bitch Cristal Connors, who halfway through the film “trips” down a flight of stairs courtesy of the jealous Nomi. This act of sabotage allows Nomi to headline the glamorous show and take part in the scene: the infamous “love” scene in Zack’s pool where Nomi convulses her way to orgasm.
Showgirls, if anything, is wonderful to look at—and not just for the T&A&such. The dazzling show sequences are a highlight in the otherwise shredded movie. Director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, also penned by Joe Eszterhas) would have loved to have been compared to sexploitation god Russ Meyer here, but we can’t give him that: his women are too weak, too flat-chested. And unlike Meyer, Verhoeven’s movie has always been a joke (and an easy one at that).
Showgirls is the All About Eve of both Las Vegas and the Golden Raspberries (the antithesis to the Oscars). While in its initial theatrical run, Verhoeven’s glitzy spectacle seemed destined for the Razzies and midnight screenings. It is, surface and deeper, a Mystery Science Theater 3000 wet dream.
But isn’t that the fun of it? I loved Showgirls in all of its camp-glory, from the Puppy Chow conversation between Nomi and Cristal (which we only assume has some sort of subtext) to the surreal moment involving monkeys in the dressing room--this movie has everything! But most importantly, Showgirls goes from sleazy to sexy in two seconds flat—and back in one.
The Greatest Movie Ever Made: Audio Commentary by David Schmader with Video Commentary on the Strip Club Dance Scene by the Girls of Scores: This is one of the funniest audio commentaries you could ever find. While Schmader has nothing per-se to do with the film, he is an avid fan and Showgirls expert. His energy and willingness to poke fun at everything in the film makes this an essential listen.
Lap Dance Tutorial featuring the World-Famous Girls of Scores (4:55): If your girlfriend isn’t into it, she doesn’t love you.
A Showgirls Diary (10:46): This storyboard-to-screen featurette has four clips, most of which focus on stripping.
Trivia Track: The Pop-Up Video fashion gives the track a cheesier quality, making the movie that much more fun. A few interesting tidbits thrown about make it worth putting on after you’ve seen the film.
Rounding out Showgirls: Fully Exposed Edition is the Trailer and previews for the DVD releases of The Great Escape and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Okay…
